I like Zidane. He's humble, extremely gifted and supremely creative. :D

Ronaldo and Beckham hugs the lime light but when it comes to results, Zidane is first among equals.

France will be in the final.

man, i just stood in fron the tv and couldn't believe my eyes. it was the same pathetic feeling i had few years ago when man. utd won the champions league by beating bayern munchen in the last 2 minutes.
england still had these kind of problems at Euro 2000 against Romania, and at France 98, the same against Romania

Bastards. I hate England, but I hate Francis much more than that.

EXTREMELY disspointing performance from Michael Owen.

David Beckham, as I have said time and time again, should stick to modelling. When he tries his very best and puts EVERYTHING on the line, he is still one of the most mediocre players in the world.

Don't tell me he got the ball to Lampard's head either, because it was clear he wasn't aiming specifically for anybody.

    JEEZ!!! I CANT BELIEVE IT!

IMO Henry and Beckham were really exposed in this game. Beckham is just not that good, while Henry cannot play anywhere except for the EPL.

I'm so damn dissapointed, even though I hate both teams, I wanted France to lose.

If Holland lose, all hell will break loose.

Sidenote: Nothing like major soccer tournaments. I sat and watched the game with almost 100 people yesterday, and by the end of the game, it seemed like I was friends with every single England fan. Hubbly bubbly, tea, snacks, sandwiches, air conditioning.. What more could I ask for? I love soccer season.

I got the package and have taped every game so far but will probably erase the Swizterland vs. Croatia game which was a complete waste of time. Thank God for France vs. England. I have almost every single World cup game on tape for these years: 1994, 1998, 2002 and have most of the Euro 2000 games. Lots of classic games in these tournaments. Shoot me an e-mail.

Man, what a game!!!!!!! That's why soccer is the GREATEST sport in the world. I love the NBA and NFL but they can't hold a candle to major tournaments like the World cup and Euros b/c these are the BEST players in the world representing their countries. Man, Zidane is rapidly writing his names in the history books to belong in the class of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckanbauer and other geniuses of the game. That was a classic game. Can't wait for Holland Germany!!! Peace.

Larsson's first goal was a brilliant header, Bulgaria had almost equalised about 30 seconds before his first, then he put the match away a minute later. Denmark looked very impressive against Italy, both goalkeepers made some great saves.

I always wonder if Beckham would be half as popular without the goodlook. You know that guy is worshipped like a rock star around the world. It's crazy.

I agree. I really don't like the French team very much, but Zidane is just a pure genius. Just the way he treats the ball is among the most elegant I have ever seen. You named exactly the right people who are in the same class as him. I would say that a step behind these guys would be people like Platini, Ronaldo, Gerd Mueller, Rummenigge, Bobby Charlton, Van Basten, Gullit, etc....people who were/are great in their own right, but just not as elegant and complete or successful as the guys you mentioned. Zidane is cementing his place among the very first tier. I love watching him play.

Entertaining first match with the Czech Republic getting a late goal to defeat a Latvian team that really played their hearts out. Now it's time for the big one: Germany-Holland. I really think that one of these teams is going to get left out of the quarterfinals, with the Czechs taking one of the spots.

now another reason to dislike Torsten fringes.
1st his left arm stopping a US goal ON THE GOAL LINE!
    and now this.
I hope hugh dallas isn't officiating.

Rather boring match, and Holland looked HORRIBLE until the nice goal by van Nistelrooy. I'd heard so much about Van der Vaart going into the tournament but beside the shot he had late in the first half, he was basically invisible.

I agree, Schweinsteiger was probably the best player on the pitch for either team today.

I think that Holland was very lucky to come out with a draw today. Germany was clearly in control until Holland scored a lucky goal in the 80th minute or so (the German goal was also lucky, I'll admit that). But considering how everyone counted us out already beforehand, we did quite well, especially in the first half, when Holland was actually being dominated and intimidated by the German fighting spirit and tactical discipline. In the end, Holland could have even come out with a win, because the equalizer threw us off somewhat. Anyway, overall, I think both teams have a decent chance to proceed. The game against the Czech Republic will be like a playoff clincher for either team.

Don't get me wrong, Beckham would still be famous in Europe and in Asia but I reckon that marriage with an ex-Spice Girl really put him on the map. Nothing like sports and "music" stars cross-pollinating.

Wow! Another great match for the Greeks with the 1-1 tie with Spain. This is the best that the Greeks could have hoped for, imo, and I couldn't be more pleased yet again. I thought the match was actually pretty decent overall and the last 20 minutes were flat-out nervewracking for me with all the relentless Spanish attacks. Juaquin was absolutely everywhere for Spain and nearly won the game for them on numerous occasions and the Greeks were lucky to escape with the draw.

Portugal took the second game of the night 2-0 over Russia, but it looks like the hosts will still need a victory over Spain Sunday to advance to the quarters. I think its going to be hard for Scolari to leave Ronaldo out of the starting 11 for that match, the pace he brings to game is really important to that squad. The Greeks are sitting pretty right now.

I thought the red card against the Russian keeper was a joke, he did not even touch the ball with his hands and actually actively tried to keep his hands away from the ball.

Even with 10 against 11, I thought the Russians were better than the Portuguese team for long stretches, and Portugal was lucky to win. However, I also think that Portugal can still go very far in this tournament, they can only get better from here.

I have a question about how ties are broken if anyone knows the answer. If two teams are tied for the last spot to advance on points and on goal differential, who advances? Is it the team with the most goals scored, the least goals against, or something else?
