Independence day? Are you sure you got the song title correct. I tried to google the lyrics and came up empty-handed.
Can't be, there's nothing religious in that song and it can't be 4th of July since it's an instrumental. Maybe RMT has some weird ideas about what constitutes religious lyrics. I don't listen to Christian "rock" but from what I've seen on those compilation infomercials, it's not similar to what U2 does. There's no "preaching" about religion from U2, there certainly not giving you the Lakewood spiel about how much better your life would be if you worship. I think RMT is a blues guy and U2 does not have any or much blues in their DNA.
Yes, "New Years Day"...sorry for the snafu. Listen to the last line of the recording...Bono ad libs it. It's not part of the lyrics as written.
Are you sure? Do I need to play it backwards or something because I'm not hearing it? I'm listening to the Longer version too btw, not the truncated video version that seems to omit this last part that comes in at the 4:50 mark: And so we are told this is the golden age And gold is the reason for the wars we wage Though I want to be with you Be with you night and day Nothing changes On New Year's Day On New Year's Day On New Year's Day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3reF1gfkTAc
You say you'll change the constitution Well, you know We all want to change your head You tell me it's the institution Well, you know You better free you mind instead But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow Don't you know it's gonna be all right all right, all right all right, all right, all right all right, all right, all right
*****! *****! *****!! I screwed it all up. The song I was thinking of was "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Sorry for the mixup. A thousand apologies. Yes...I'm old and feeble minded...what's it to ya sonny???
I'm going to bootleg Rocketman Tex's next hippie blues track and upload it onto Guitar Hero. Then I'm going to beat it on expert and proclaim me better than him at guitar.
So you are talking about this part: The real battle just begun To claim the victory Jesus won I still don't see how that's preaching like a Christian Rock song. The song is about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, so he's talking about two groups of people; Catholics/IRA and Protestants/Loyalists/Unionists, who believe in the same god and are so bitterly divided (though it's more about wanting to or not be ruled by England). Maybe the battle Jesus won is Easter and the battle that just begun is a reference to the Easter Rising which was very important to the IRA. They are preachy though, just not about religion, it's more about peace and helping the less fortunate. The Bono hate in my experience usually sounds like this "Why is this rich douchebag telling me to give my money to Africa? Why doesn't he donate all of his money to Africa?" I think that hate is off base since he's not really asking people to donate money, he works for orginizations that are asking world leaders to forgive Africa's debts and trying to help Africa via trade instead of charity. Some will argue that helping Africa too much is crippling them and making them dependent on others, but that's a topic for another thread. In the meantime, the first single from the new album is apparently called "Sexy Boots" and these clips have a hint of the main rif: http://media.u2.com/flash/highlights/greentea.swf http://media.u2.com/flash/highlights/larrydrumming_april08.swf
Oski....it might not be too preachy for you, but it is for me. That's why I don't listen to U2. I've got no problem with Bono's humanitarian work. He does alot of good in that arena.
