Hey guys, just got the U-verse wireless internet kit deivered. They (AT&T) were supposed to come out between 2-5pm but never showed. I think they were just going to check the phone line, and since I had it installed in the last 5 years I know I'm probably good to go. So I'm going to install it myself, and since I have no experience whatsoever with broadband I figured I'd ask a few (probably stupid) questions. Although my kit is wireless I don't see any kind of receiver(s). What computer part is it that receives the wireless signal? I have no router, hub or whatever, just the modem. I see there are 4 ethernet ports in the back of the modem. Can I hook up 2 computers at the same time, and does the modem split the broadband up itself, or how does that work? My 2nd computer is a little over 25ft away, so if I don't go wireless (no biggie) I will have to get a 50ft ethernet cable. I can get a no-name cat6 cable for $9.99, or a name-brand (Belkin) cat5e cable for the same price. Which would be better? Thanks in advance for any help/advice delivered.
You need to purchase a internal or external wireless adapter for your computer unless it's a laptop. Most if not all laptops come with wifi. If you're purchasing a wireless one for your computer, I would recommend the linksys external wifi adapter. I've tried the linksys internal ones and they're horrible. Yes you can hook up to 4 computers + wireless all at the same time. At my parents home, I have everything set up wirelessly and have at times, about 6-7 wireless devices going on. If it's the same price, I would go with Belkin although they're probably about the same thing.
Does your 2nd computer have a wireless adapter? If the computer is at least somewhat new, it should. If the modem has 4 ethernet ports and you sepcifically ordered wireless service, then the modem you got is both a modem and a router. If all youre computer can be connected wirelessly, and you did get a modem/router, then you should only have to connect the modem/router to the phone line and the power (electricity), and it should work.
in the wireless network connections, search for your router and install software to set up security. But you can also connect four computers to your modem/router with ethernet cables.
Thanks for replying guys. Although my 1st comp. is pretty new, the 2nd (and farther) one is a Dell Dimension 4600c that's probably about 8 years old.
