Anyone have info on how big a % Texas pays for undergraduate public university compared to california? I would be interested to see all the states with total income tax and property tax paid to the state relative to how much the state pays in education. I think education is the most important thing states have the responsibility.
People in california pay next to nothing for their state schools. even with the increase, they are getting a deal

Reagonmics sucks if you don't have an income of at least $100-to $150 to make up for the lost services or high tuitions etc. Reaganomics really gets good if you make over $300k as your tax breaks clearly exceed your tuition increases, lost pension rights etc. The higher your income it even sweeter. I was amused to see Geroge Will a month or so ago saying what was the big deal as he thought UCLA and Cal Berkeley should charge Stanford tuition or what the market bears to help with the conservative caused economic crisis in California. What type of America did these folks grow up with? It is clear what type of America they want. Screw the middle class. You have to wonder if they ever chuckle as the teaparty types and other middle to lower class folks vote for these policies.
One of the major costs of college are the facilities and land. It costs alot to pay for the initial cost of the building. The monthly costs of maintainance, repairs, electricity, water, and gas are also a big drain. For pure education, students don't need the extra-curricular activities, athletics, a giant college building. Some colleges have cut expenses by $10,000-15,000 a semester! I am sure the U California can offer off-campus classes for these students and decrease student fees. The solution for the U California could be as simple as stopping new construction and adding classes at a cheaper leased satellite location. Here is a great story on a college giving the education without the amenities for the first 2 years. http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2009/02/03/cut_rate_campus/
When I was in college (almost 20 years ago), there was a kid there from LA. He had no family in Texas, etc. We asked him why he decided to attend A&M. He said that out of state tuition in Texas was less than in state tuition in California.
