In the modern era (starting with Jack Dempsey, sorry Jack Johnson et al), I'd rank Tyson around the 8-10 range. Ali Louis Dempsey Lewis (this seems high, but honestly he would probably beat a lot of the guys on this list because he was so much bigger - he outweighed rocky marciano by about 60 lbs and was seven inches taller) Marciano Larry Holmes Sonny Liston George Foreman Joe Frazier Evander Holyfield Mike Tyson
I remember after that second fight with Razor Ruddick thinking Tyson wasn't really that great of a fighter anymore -- people tend to overrate both of those fights IMO. Up until then I thought the Douglas fight was some sort of fluke, but it was really just the beginning of the end.
Pretty much. His lack of size hurt him severely. If you look at all of his losses there's a noticeable disparity in height/reach that undoubtedly served as an advantage to his opponent. The best example of this was the Lennox Lewis fight where Lewis just kept killing him with his lengthy jab and never gave Tyson a chance to get inside and do his bulldog thing.
Very true. In fact, your point probably carries more weight than mine because it's not like before Buster Douglas he was fighting a bunch of midgets. It was only after his personal life and training habits went into disarray that his size disadvantage seemingly became magnified.
There hasn't been a SportsCentury or Behind the Lines done about this guy already? Tyson's bio is starting to seem more-and-more like the "Rumble in the Jungle," where they make a trillion documentaries and feature films about the same one thing over and over again.
