Under current rules, Chicago would have to wait till December 15. If a restricted free agent signs elsewhere and his original team matches, he then receives trade blocking privileges for one year, and Chicago can NOT trade him to the team he originally signed the offer sheet for.

NBA contracts are guaranteed. Cutting players does not create cap space. At this point, there is nothing we can do (nor was there really anything we could've done in recent times). Cap management is a long term function.

There have been numerous threads dealing with what the Rockets can do. I've already said it in this thread. We have expiring contracts, which are good for bailing teams out of bad cap situations. Point is, what everyone has been saying and trying to say, our assets won't land us top restricted free agents. No Tyson Chandlers. No Joe Johnsons. We're not going to be able to get Michael Redds or Ray Allens even though they're unrestricted. We're on the next tier, competing with the rest of the league.

Who we can get is entirely a function of situation, also. Take Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Unrestricted free agents like SAR are free to sign with whomever they choose. We can offer a starting spot on a contender, which SAR has never been on. Abdur-Rahim's numbers are slightly down, and the teams with cap space would much prefer a player with more growth potential. Also, teams with cap space either already have 4s or would be losing situations. As already mentioned, Portland doesn't want him back, and may be open to a trade. In addition, SAR's coming off a $70 million dollar contract. There's a huge difference between having banked over 75 mill vs. $15 mill.

THAT is what I call opportunity. Getting Abdur-Rahim isn't going to be easy, but at least the opportunity is there and somewhat real. Which is more than you can say for Chandler. Chandler's agent won't waste our time and his time talking about it.

Well, I'm finally starting to see things your way. Chandler is attainable, but it would be very very difficult to get him with our situation at this point in the year. A trade by December 15th is our best chance or a gentleman's agreement.

This RFA situation has got to change. I think a RFA should be allowed to be involved in a sign and trade.

So, what'll it take to get SAR? Does he have any desire to be in Houston? I know he'd be appreciated more in Houston than Portland. Taking that paycutt will probably be difficult for him. If he signs for the full exception that we have, will we be able to sign any other free agents?

Anyone have a link that shows me our current cap situation? Do we have any players on the books that don't play for the Rockets? Does Ward's contract give us an exception with his year long injury?
