The guy who plays McKinney is always an unlikeable character, easy choice to go with Westhead.

Especially when he told Westhead who is supposed to be his brother and best friend that the only reason he chose Westhead to be an assistant is because Westhead doesn’t have it to be a head coach.

I looked it up in real life McKinney and Westhead did not speak after he got fired by the Lakers.

YouTube has the 1980 Finals trophy presentation and Westhead mentions McKinney.

Tracy Letts: supremely talented guy, won a Pulitzer as a writer (nominated 2 other times) and a Tony as both writer and actor.

But yes, he's played an a'hole in all of his notable TV roles.

    I like the series
Then again . . . I'm not taking it as 100% fact either

No disrespect to the guy, playing a good a'hole is a talent.

It is, and I never said otherwise, and as such I agreed with you originally.

Killer Joe is a solid film adaptation of one of his plays: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_Joe_(film)

Really hated those Laker teams but the show is really well done, I'm not to bothered by the deviations from reality so looking forward to season two....

Is each season going to cover one year?

What storylines do you focus on S2?

    Riley pushes out Westhead

    Jeanie takes more control

    Magic vs Bird

    Magic’s high risk sex

My guess. They'll land in that Bird rivalry spot at least by S3. The writers said they want to show their eventual friendship. If they get there in S2 then my guess is we'll get to Kobe/Shaq sooner rather than later. If not, who knows, might take a decade. I hope we see Ralph Sampson beat their ass, lulz.

Was there any truth to David Stern switching the MVP like that? Cant wait to see how shady and sleazy they make him, lulz. Marketing genius sleazeball.

Doubt it. Likely gets more condensed. Then skips the early 90s.

i would think the series ends with magics retirement in 1991. remember that the beginning of the first episode was him getting diagnosed.

they have to condense it or else its going to take 10 years to do the whole story.

i watched the whole thing in about 2 weeks and now im sad that there are no more new episodes for me to watch...it was great!

That is what I thought at first. It was just the Magic Lakers

But it's based on a book series that also includes the Shaq/Kobe Lakers. Why build up Jeanie Buss now if they aren't going there (if the show is a success)?

And... post-HIV Magic played. Eventually. Kind of (lol).

Apparently, that was sort of true but didn't involve Stern.....

The final controversy in Winning Time episode 10 delivers another rather surprising true story. After winning the NBA Finals, it is said that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is going to be the MVP, but David Stern tells Magic Johnson that he could take the award instead since Kareem isn't there. This is a mostly accurate account of what happened in real life, although it was CBS who orchestrated the NBA Finals MVP switch in Winning Time's true story. Former sports columnist and author Bill Livingston admitted in Kareem's 1990 autobiography that CBS pressured voters to change their votes because they didn't want to present the trophy to an empty seat due to Kareem not being at the game. Livingston confirmed that enough people changed their votes so that Magic Johnson won the Finals MVP based on a 4-3 count over Kareem. While Magic delivered a dominant performance in the Lakers' championship-clinching game, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dominated the prior five games and is largely viewed as the person who should've won the 1980 NBA Finals MVP.

I haven't watched the series, but Magic was worthy, especially with the extra game played:
