Why is America living vicariously through all these TV shows? Not saying the OP is, just saying that seems to be what's hot these days. Shows about people trying to make it big. Stop watching other people trying to succeed, and live your own life!

I caught about the last 1/2 (final 4 groups) on it and it was ok

of the 4 i saw the belezeebubs were the best IMO

the group that got booted off it was obvious, they have potential need more work.

maybe it was because they were all upset and crying but their rendition of 'i will survive' sounded pretty bad

ben folds was by far the best judge at critiquing the groups

i dont think i'll continue to watch it on purpose but i'll stay on the channel if i flip to it and not much else is on (that was the case for me last night)

I could enjoy a show like this if the performances were better. I saw the first four groups perform and I just wasn't very impressed. I was expecting some amazing vocal performances and it just didn't happen.

Did you know Take 6 was in in Brazosport last Friday? I heard it was a good show.

I caught some of the show. Of the few acts I saw, some of the arrangements were really weak. I totally got what BetterThanI was saying about how some songs just shouldn't be done a capella. Ben Folds even made a comment about how song selection was a major factor in a competition like this. Ben Folds and the other male judge seemed to know what they were talking about. The girl judge came off as dim, maybe talented by not having enough theoretical or technical knowledge to offer any real insight or advice. I was surprisingly impressed by Ben Folds' analysis of the performances.

To start off, I've been a music teacher for the past 6 years.

This is true...but in a show choir it's kind of what they do. Now granted, I never let my choirs do pop songs and had my choirs do jazz, but I will not begrudge a music teacher letting their kids do pop songs. Sometimes you need to get your students just singing in general before you educate them. If you give kids who've never, ever heard any Whitacre or Courtney before, they'll probably go crazy from the strange dissonances they've never heard before.

This is assuming that the students you are talking about are in an intermediate or advanced touring/competition choir. If a music teacher is doing pop songs for these kids then yes, I agree it's ridiculous. However, if you are teaching beginners, I do not see anything wrong with tossing in a pop song or two. It gives them something they know and you can definitely build off that into classical music.

No, we teachers are not entertainers, but you can mix in fun with teaching. Whenever I started off my high school choir, I would have them do a journal. And on the board would be a stupid little riddle. And while the riddle had absolutely nothing to do with music, it got them in the frame of mind to both think and work.

    my 2 cents worth.
