http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/03/09/85-the-wire/ It is a good show, I put it right below Deadwood and above The Shield.
Easily the best show I've ever watched. The level of detail surpasses anything, as does the acting. Season 5 is not the worst. Season 2 is, but by any other show's standards, it woud be the best. You get the sense that season 5 was rushed, which it was.
I really liked Deadwood but half the actors weren't very good, especially the alcoholic chick. Also their was no resolution. I do wish it would have gone on longer.

I got the complete series box set sitting on my shelf. I had heard so much and found a killer deal on it so I bought it on a whim. I really really need to get around to watching it

I was kind of amused to notice the actor who plays Opie in Sons Of Anarchy played Gerry in Remember the Titans.
My favorite scene from all of the series is the very first one from the very first episode: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LYgKmOJT_gM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LYgKmOJT_gM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> I also really like the scene when Spoiler snoop buys a nail gun <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QcqWVX3H87U?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QcqWVX3H87U?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Snoop and the salesman's world and interests intersect momentarily and they almost have a moment, but by the end its clear they are total aliens to each other.
Per some of the responses in this thread, I am now downloading Deadwood / The Shield. I've been trying to catch up in old tv series I never saw (finished Sopranos last week), so this should kill some time. I was going to try Firefly, but then I watched the movie first and lost interest in watching an entire season about it, ha.
Where are you "downloading" these series? I've been looking for The Wire on the web, any suggestions?
From legal websites, of course. I might have other recommendations if you would enable your e-mail through the board or e-mail me.
the wire is the best show ever. hands down. seen the entire series about 6 times. after watching it again season 2 is better than when i first saw it. to me season 3 is too unrealistic. (free zones) was disappointed how short season 5 was. great music too. check out Treme and Generation Kill(mini-series) they're down by the same people. only show i've watched thats come close to the wire is breaking bad.

Well seeing the responses in this thread, I'll keep watching. I just saw the first disc of the first season from Netflix (episodes 1-3) and it seemed like the typical cop drama. I guess it gets better. I'll stick with it.
Spoiler Two scenes in the early first season mark a turning point: 1. The infamous "****" scene with Bunk, McNulty and some of the most genius dialogue ever done. 2. The chess scene with D, Bodie and Poot.
