But nostalgia is entertaining to some, and I definitely still laugh at it. If the quotes didn't make people laugh or smile, nobody would keep using them. Well, ok, maybe Swoly would. As for you not liking Seinfeld after not having watched it during its heyday, then you wouldn't be able to say whether or not it's held up over time - you never watched it then and don't like it now.
Some of the series that hold up? Seinfeld, of course. Cheers, Taxi, All in the Family, Monty Python, Bob Newhart (the original), and The Larry Sanders Show are some others. Anyone who hasn't seen The Larry Sanders Show, a hilarious comedy/satire that ran on HBO some years back, based on The Tonight Show of Johnny Carson's day, is due for a treat. It's outstanding.
That is correct. I think they spent a little too much time trying to figure out if Rachel Green was Jewish or not to be funny.
Just theorizing... Maybe female led shows hold up because we're finding out women in general are intriguing. How else can you explain Kardashian fame? Also, maybe storylines around women have a little bit more "importance" about them, some underlying "challenge" to the writers to make them relatable...As some compared to something like Rowan and Martin "SOCK it to me" guy schtick But then there's crap like Patty Duke thats cheesy and ANTIQUATED as hell so maybe those are just good shows by themselves .
I've never really found Chaplin's movies to be funny. It's too contrived. I think his rep is more for his filmmaking than comedy. IMO City Lights features one of the greatest scenes in film. I enjoy watching Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati movies. I find the comedy and characters more believable. The Stooges is for little kids. They would love them.
More this. I was just a tween to a teenager when I watched live episodes of Seinfeld and I didn't find it all that funny. A few years go by and I see it's in syndication on TBS and find the show hilarious. I watch it now and think it just seems like an old sitcom. It's hard to explain but I see a lot of 90s references that I don't find all that funny anymore. Whereas when I watch Frasier I just see better writing, acting and situations that have aged better over time than Seinfeld has is all. Then again I'm not someone that ever viewed Seinfeld as the GOAT sitcom like some people on this board.
Yes. Also News Radio, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore, MASH, Sanford and Son, Barney Miller, Bob Newhart.
ABC programming at that time, almost by DESIGN was light hearted family fun. ABC even now has a whole other devoted "ABC Family" network for a reason, they just cater to that niche. Shows like Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, Full House, Webster, etc...very safe, not surprised those shows would look tacky later. I watched those shows cuz stuff like Newhart seemed too "high brow" for me then lol.
I still find Seinfeld funny, but...it's already quite dated. Every single "situation" they find themselves in...could be solved with a simple mobile phone. I realize that can be said for all shows pre-cell phone-era. However, Seinfeld is the one show truly based on the minutiae of daily life. As such, that one thing literally affects every episode.
Chaplin was more than just slapstick.. Watch Modern Times, that movie is essential viewing a must watch for anybody interested in Cinema...
