It would be more interesting to me if I gave a damn whether or not they actually saved the guy. Since he's a scumbag, I don't.

They also don't need Merle as a vehicle to build anyone's character. They're already showing Rick's loyalty through his desire to go back for the walkie talkie, for example.

I had DVR'd the first episode but didn't get around to watching it until this week. Then I DVR'd a replay of the 2nd episode and watched the 3rd last night. Glad I gave it a chance. Can't wait for the next 3 episodes.

Data from Goonies = Short Round from Temple of Doom. Same actor.

It adds conflict. Even if the other guys didn't want to be honorable and go back for him, they still have to appease his brother since he's the only real hunter of the group. The brother's an unlikeable character too but everybody has to put up with him because he's valuable. I like how there's not only the external conflict with the zombies, but also internal conflict amongst the survivors.

I think the brother could end up being a likeable character. Shane did at least seem more deserving of sympathy.

If someone is that valuable to the group simply because they can kill some squirrels, then you might as well give up. The truth is, bigots and loose cannons would get left behind in the type of situation they're in.

You would clearly not survive in a Zombie apocolypse. :p

The one brother is valuable to the group, he is the best hunter and one of the better zombie combatants which is a MUST. The other brother (who cut off his hand) is NOT valuable however. He is far too reckless and has clearly put the others in danger on multiple occasions. He is physically assaulting other members of the group while the other brother has not done that yet.

IMO, when the one brother is found, his brother will kill him shortly afterwards. I find that character annoying and hope he is written out.

He also killed a deer but a zombie got to it first. Shane talked a big game but couldn't gig any frogs. I think the fact that nobody except Daryl went off to hunt says something.

Yep, there are a lot of useless people in the group. The most important ones are Daryl, Carl, and Rick. I think Shane could be useful in a gun fight, but that's about it.

Carl is the kid right? Why is he important?

Glenn is important as he knows how to get in and out of Atlanta. Valuable skill as there is likely a lot of resources they can get out of the city. Dale (old man) and his partner are valuable as they appear to be mechanics, or at least mechanically inclined.

Shane is valuable in that fighting the zombies is important. Handling weapons as well as possessing the personality to offer control to the group are both important skill sets, though he is less valuable with Rick around as a leader. His familiarity with guns is still an important skill, both in fighting zombies and fighting other potential survivor groups that may attack.

Daryl is a hunter and is skilled with a crossbow, a weapon that can be fired silently. Very valuable member.

The rest of the survivors aren't blatantly valuable, but still present some value to the group. If food becomes a problem though, there is definitely a clear segment of the population that could be cast out for necessity without hurting the survival chances of the rest.

    I meant Glenn, not Carl

I'm still not certain on all the names yet

Oh boy...he killed a deer. I'm sure the two cops can't aim a crossbow.

Daryl was probably sent off to hunt because he's worthless in every other regard.

I wonder if you've been hunting before. It isn't as easy as pointing a weapon and shooting. You have to find it first.

Got it. If nothing else, the others also can be human shields. I mean I hate to say it, but if they get attacked by zombies, I'd rather be one 1 option out of 10 than 1 out of 4. Always have a weapon and a vehicle. The others can be distractions while you get out.

That was my thinking too. If that craptacular saw could cut through bone, I am pretty sure it cold cut through that small chain.

Michael Rooker is shown as being in 5 of the 6 episodes this season. He was not in the first.

Also, why hang out around Atlanta? I'd head to the coast, set up shop on an island, grow rice, and eat fish while waiting for the zombies to die off. You cold probably clear Jekyll Island of zombies within a day or two and live well for a good long time (assuming no direct hurricane hits).

Actually Carl will become important later on if they go by the comics

Apparently this is a super spoiler below... do not click if you don't want to know. -Admin
as he will become quite proficient (very quickly) with a gun and he will save his fathers life and kill Shane who is about to murder Rick due to jealousy.

Can zombies walk underwater? Do they need to breath?
