My wife and I were in Phuket last January. We were staying beachside. I see these videos and it makes me feel sick. Its going to end up being in the 100,000 range by the time the diseases spread everywhere. Those poor people. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them. The People I Wanted to Slap on the Train Award: I was on the subway this afternoon and this stupid lady starts telling her friend that "see, its the End of Days, and luckily WE will be ok, praise Jesus, the Lord is already striking down all the nonbelievers." Her friend nodded. I couldn't believe it. People are nuts!!!!
Don't read too much into those labels. We, the administrators, are each empowered to cut dickheads off at the knees when they deserve it, regardless of which forum the d******d in question has sullied. Not that I'm calling you a d******d! That's a figure of speech. I'm just speaking of people who post stupid ****-- they may or may not be dickheads. Sishir, for instance-- not a d******d. Probably a pretty good guy, just posted something that I personally thought was beginning to approach D&D level glurg. You, on the other hand-- well, you're you and we all think that's SUPER.
Dude! There was a pic of a little Swedish kid on Yahoo earlier. The kid was wandering around with a little sign saying "Help! Parents are missing." or something to that effect... Wonder if it's the same kid. Horrible...
dont mean to derail this thread, but i hate how everything can be turned into some dd sniping. i rather much talk about farting, and pissing in the shower, photoshopping each other, and posting near naked pics of girls and talking about how much your school sucks compared to mine, and this board will be soooooooo much better if YY was here.
Here's a reason to keep it in the Hangout...increase viewers: This is a friend of one of my classmates. I know it's unlikely, but I figure it's worth a shot. If any of yall know someone there or someone that is going over there to help in the efforts, please pass this along. http://www.webspawner.com/users/mcooper1975/index.html (see the website for a pic of the missing woman) --------------------------------------- Hi. I'm currently looking for a close relative who is missing in Thailand after the tsunami struck. Her name is Francisca Cooper. She is caucasian, blond wavy hair, 1.70 mts tall, athletic, 26 years old, chilean, and was spending her honeymoon with her husband Mr. Aurelio Montes at the Princess Resort in Phi Phi Island. She has a small scar at the front base of her neck. Her whole family is really desperate, and we don't know if she's alive or conscious. What we do know is that she doesn't know much english, so we guess it won't be easy to identify her once they find her. If you have any information concerning her whereabouts, please write to the e-mail that appears in this page. We will also deeply thank you if you spread her picture by e-mail or other means. mcooper08121975@yahoo.com
Can you guys just move the derailing posts to a thread of their own? The way things are going we could be looking at 150,000-200,000 if/when diseases start spreading. Some media outlets have the death toll currently at over 70,000.
I saw when it first happened, some people where standing around just watching not knowing how bad it could be. I hope this could never happen in the gulf.
The poll over at CNN asking if you donated money to help for this disaster and 88% of people who answered so far said no.
Brian; Thanks. I wasn't trying to start a debate about blasting the Bush Admin.. I was just trying to give people some insight into what attitudes are like in that part of the world and as I said I think it is petty and stupid. I didn't like having to tell people I was Canadian when I was there but it was something that I realized I had to do for my own safety. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from donating to the relief effort.
No matter how much we may disagree with one another, help out anyway you can... I've been to Phuket and it is a very beautiful place...Its sad to see this happen to innocent people... Can you imagine, no warning...the video of the two white guys holding on to each othere that was on CNN last night still haunts me...Its crazy...Anyway, my thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families...
While that's distressing its not something to get too worried about right away. I'm working on putting together a relief campaign here with several Asian American groups and it looks like most people are still getting organized. This happening over the Christmas holidays haven't helped either since many people are out of town. I was on the phone with my local Red Cross chapter and most of their fundraising coordinators are on vacation. Also while giving money now doesn't hurt most groups aren't in position yet to use it. According to the my Red Cross chapter its going to take them a few days to do damage assesment and put together relief plans then they will know how best to use and distribute resources. My big fear is that in two weeks most Americans will forget about this at a time when aid when the need will still be dire and aid will do the most good.
TL and DD; That's really sad to hear and I hope your friends and co-workers are found. I think I mentioned this earlier but I have family in the region who are OK but its tragic that so many aren't.
I doubt the media's going to let anyone forget about a tragedy of this magnitude, so hopefully that number will go up. Personally I donated a day's pay. I liked the symbolism of it for some reason.
Am I the only one hesitant about giving money to the Red Cross? I want to donate directly to help the victims, and I know a lot of people who think very little of the Red Cross.
I saw this on Google today, it might be of interest to you: http://www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html
I'm just wondering why don't you think very much of the Red Cross? They have the most capability and the longest track record of responding to disasters.
