    Judge Reverses Course On Covington Catholic Student Nick Sandmann’s Lawsuit Against The Washington Post

    A federal judge in Kentucky reopened Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann’s $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Washington Post on Monday after having previously dismissed it over the summer.

    “After reviewing an amended complaint, Judge William Bertelsman ordered Monday that the case could enter the discovery phase and hence a portion of the lawsuit against the newspaper could continue,” the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

    The lawsuit is allowed to proceed but has been limited in scope after the judge said that 30 out of the 33 statements that Sandmann’s lawyers argued were libelous were not actually libelous.

    Washington Post settles $250M suit with Covington teen Nick Sandmann
    :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    It’s the teen’s second win in a whopping $800 million defamation battle against a number of news outlets including the Washington Post, CNN, ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Hill and NBC.

    CNN agreed to settle with Sandmann in January this year as part of a separate $275 million claim.

    Something tells me he didn't get anywhere near the 250 million he was seeking. Nevertheless, I'm thinking he probably got a settlement in the 500k-2 million range conservatively. The fact that WaPo and CNN didn't fight this till the end tells me they were worried.

    HOPEFULLY, all media will take notice and take care to be more responsible in their reporting...ALL media. (I'm not holding my breath).

    Honestly, good for the kid, I guess? The outrage that came out after the videos surfaced was extreme, and hopefully some learned a lesson of not jumping to conclusions too fast...at least in the media (doubtful, but one can dream).

    I’m more sad that the media entities didn’t fight back on this one...not so much to prove they were right (they weren’t), but to solidify first amendment rights and freedoms of the press. Now, I fear, we’ll see a number of frivolous lawsuits towards media entities that will probably only weaken their standing in America.

    As bad as the individual entities are, the collective media should not be silenced and we should have freedom of the press. I don’t blame the kid, or even the right for this...the companies in charge of CNN and The WaPo should be ashamed of themselves for not fighting though.

    I haven't seen anything about the amount of the settlement but I doubt it puts him anywhere near billionaire level. While I agree it was wrong for so many people to jump to conclusions over this story and for major news outlets to skew their coverage but at the same time I don't think they should've settled as this will have a chilling effect. I think an apology and retraction should've been the right step and anything beyond that should've been fought out on principle.

    So what CNN and WaPo did wrong here as I see it is release video of an event without having the intellectual curiosity to seek out an alternate perspective. Ya, it's obviously bad journalism. But it seems like such a common practice in media today that I would expect far more lawsuits. Maybe there are but I don't know it.

    What do the lawyers here think about this? @Nook
