Assuming that Trump will be competing for the GOP nomination.

I can see Trump re-branding DeSantis.
    • DeSantis is anti-business, using his anti-disney stand as an eg
    • DeSantis is anti-children, transportating children across state lines to MA
    • DeSantis has committed crime, transportating children across state lines to MA

Mickie is just Minnie's manifestation of her masculine identity that reared his ugly head when she was drunk in college. It all makes sense now!

    Maybe.

There are a lot of Trumpers that will likely still vote for Trump if he decides to go third party if he loses the Primary.

Then there is the issue of debates. DeSantis is very well prepared in general and gives strong press confrences but he doesn't always look good in debates. There is a real chance that Trump gets a couple "gotcha" moments against DeSantis... and how will Trump supporters feel when DeSantis takes some swipes against Trump?

This is something that the party would LOVE to work out behind closed doors, and I am sure DeSantis feels the same way. The problem is that Trump isn't likely to agree to anything short of the nomination and he will go scorched earth if he has to.

I have read that people think Trump is concerned about his Republican legacy, if that were true he wouldn't be running in 2024.

This is all an ego game for Trump and the threat of a third-party run may be enough to get the Republican establishment to support him.

What I do know is that DeSantis isn't beating Biden if Trump is on the ballot as a third party candidate.

Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz gave a full-throated endorsement of former President Donald Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination on Wednesday as other conservatives blamed the ex-president for the Republican Party's middling performance in the midterm elections.

While some conservative commentators lashed out at Trump after several of his endorsed candidates lost their races Tuesday, Gaetz wrote in a Daily Caller op-ed that a Trump 2024 run is "necessary" to "continue to disrupt and serve the people against the Swamp."

"The job President Trump started was not finished. Only Trump can be trusted to enact the ‘America First’ agenda he ran on in 2016. We won’t accept any imitation," Gaetz wrote.

Gaetz argued that anyone else but Trump in 2024 would push the Republican Party back toward corporate interests and away from the populist issues like immigration and "draining the Swamp" that won Republicans the White House in 2016.

"Why would we stop the progress now and go back to Republicans supported by Wall Street? We shouldn’t bench our star quarterback at halftime," Gaetz wrote.

"Donald Trump started this and has no intention of being a retiree. He earned our trust by keeping his promises," Gaetz wrote. "America is broken under Biden. Trump alone can fix it."

Dear Marty Gaetz, corporate interests would exactly be poor white folks pulling their hair out over Mexicans and trans people while ignoring things like wealth inequality, price fixing *cough* yeildstar *cough* etc.

When right wing alleged "populists" actually tackle issues like price fixing the renting market with software then I will concede their goal isn't to install fascism but a sincere desire to tackle.wealth inequality.

Trump isn't going to accept anything except the nomination. There's no way, outside of him going to prison or getting a felony which disqualifies him from running for president (you listening, GOP power brokers?).

If I'm a long-term GOP planner, I say go for it. Let Trump fail, clean the pipes, rip the band-aid off. He's old anyway.

DeSantis is young and can stand clear of the carnage in preparation for 2028.

I've said it before, but I'll repeat it in this thread. A second Trump presidency is an existential threat to this country. The man tried to use every advantage of the executive branch to stay in power illegally, has cast a pall over the peaceful transfer of power and elections themselves, and has convinced most of a major political party to openly deny elections that don't go their way without any evidence (although there are some embers of hope out there after Tuesday). And to what end? His ego. He isn't a complicated man. He wants to be adored and told he's the smartest person in the room. He wants all the trappings of the presidency without doing any of the work.

Trump is also a vindictive and petty man. He's at the point where is surrounded by loyalists that he would plan to install in the federal government to tear it down from the inside (see: Kash Patel as CIA director). He would undoubtedly pull the US out of NATO, end all support for Ukraine, pull troops from South Korea, Germany, etc., and forever undo our standing as the leading democracy on earth. This isn't speculation; it was all reported on after he left office. He has no ties to American institutions and doesn't care if he destroys them.

DeSantis, on the other hand, does have ties to these institutions. He served in the military, went to Yale and would understand the gravity of his actions in a way that Trump cannot because Trump is a malignant narcissist. For that reason alone, DeSantis would be an improvement. He wouldn't drive us to the point of no return simply because he wanted to.

With DeSantis, he's as dangerous as what the base of the GOP wants.

He isn't the type to hault the brakes to be the responsible person like Adam Kinzinger or Cheney. He will pander so how dangerous DeSantis is will be determined by how deranged the base is. If the base gets dopamine hits by a president constantly b****ing about "wokeism" he will do it. He doesn't have that level of maturity in him unfortunately.

Great post. All of it is true.

I think if Trump were to win the Republican nomination, the Democrats would win. Simply because too many "normal" conservatives would understand things the way you just correctly laid them out.

If DeSantis wins the nomination, the Republicans would win.

Personally, I think this would be best for the economy, the country, the world.

But in a weird way, some Democrats might actually want Trump to get the nomination - for the same reason.

Trump is a malignant narcissist. A dangerous psychopath. Responsible Republicans should fight to prevent him from running again. Unfortunately, he somehow has the entire party in a ridiculous stranglehold. So weird.

lol, trashy red Florida still standing in 28. His braintrust is leaning on not Pulling a Christie. Plus his haughtiness wants to take Trump head on.

Florida in 5-10 yrs might be like a Godless Kansas, except with Missing Links everywhere

Trump has massive grass roots support. A rich spoiled brat with soft hands from NYC is beloved by poor rednecks from the country everywhere. It’s a real head-scratcher.

I think a potential DeSantis win hinges on whomever is running on the Dem ticket. If it’s Biden he might as well save everyone time and concede. If the Dems get their heads out of their asses and start looking at guys like Fetterman, there’s a chance. Abortion will still be a huge issue in 2 years.

I could honestly see Trump going 3rd party. He is all about himself. He needs the adoration. He does not give a damn about the GOP. He would have ran as a Democrat, if he thought he could convince them. However, it is easier to appeal to people's base emotions and demonize the "others".

DeSantis vs. Fetterman would be a walkover.
