Yup -- this is the same thing, but since Trump ordered it and not the Democrat Governor of NY, then liberals are acting like martial law has been declared and the posse comitatus is now ruling the District of Columbia.

This is basic restoration of law and order in DC. Trump is doing something liberals just can't or won't do -- bring safety to the district.

    GOOD DAY

To be fair, Bogota Columbia today is not the Bogota Columbia of 40yrs ago. It is a fairly safe place now. A lot of Americans need to update their 1980's view of other countries.

My how trumps narrative of DC has changed in just a few months..

An excellent post, @Amiga. What trump is doing, in my opinion, is an effort to make America's citizens "accustomed" to having armed US soldiers in uniform on the street corners of our cities. trump's so-called excuses for doing so make no sense whatsoever.

I can understand why @Os Trigonum is eager to be "setting aside the issue of the President of the United States calling out the National Guard to do local police work . . ." All Os is doing is the typical response from trump supporters when they essentially have no argument to make... that supposedly, "they all do it." So he trots out a governor using his state's National Guard to handle a situation within that state, which is not the same at all. It's a failed attempt to excuse what trump is doing not only in Washington D.C., but in several other locations in our country.

What does the Posse Comitatus Act say?
The Posse Comitatus Act consists of just one sentence: “Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

In practice, this means that members of the military who are subject to the law may not participate in civilian law enforcement unless doing so is expressly authorized by a statute or the Constitution.

actually, units of the National Guard have been deployed in NYC since 9/11. Hochul has simply added the subway system to their dance card.

@Os Trigonum raised a valid question, and it was addressed. However, when someone is firmly committed to a particular point of view, they may overlook or dismiss the answer and continue promoting the same narrative. At that point, it becomes an intentional avoidance of a clear and significant distinction, effectively excusing what is plainly a misuse of authority.

you understand what "setting aside the question" for the sake of argument means, yes?

I've never seen such a thing outside of a military base in the United States. It would make me feel very uncomfortable if I saw it. You see militarized police forces all over Latin America, and I don't care for it being here.

I remember the first time I saw a National Guardsman carrying an M4 carbine in Grand Central Station. Didn’t seem as though NYC passersby gave it much thought

"lawlessness is a choice". Well yes, if you send in soldiers and restrict what everyone can do - you will change behavior until the people rebel. Trump didn't prove that - it has been used for thousands of years. The Assyrians did the same thing, and then they started beheading people in the street and that worked even better. Soon no one did anything but stay in their homes in fear of the police state.

I don't know about Republicans, but Trump has already showed how he would abuse power. From the Capitol Riots to the violence in the streets (the man constantly is calling in the National Guard), to having masked "agents" picking up people in the streets and whisking them away.

Right - except what you are calling for is more like North Korea or East Berlin - where there is a police state that controls everyone and abuses power. I will give you a hint, no one wanted to live in East Berlin or North Korea because they were police states.

I remember the first time I saw a soldier in uniform carrying an assault rife was in the mid-'60's. It was in Switzerland at Zurich's train station and it wasn't the only time. Far from it. I soon found out that it was common due to the Swiss military system. I've been to the country several times since then, and they still do it. There's a more recent example below.

While I had seen on television the National Guard on our streets called out by a state's governor, Kent State being a sad example, I hadn't seen the National Guard called out, illegally, by a President of the United States to patrol our city streets until trump decided to do so. We should all be concerned about what's happening now.

Swiss soldiers carry their assault rifles as they walk along a train platform on their return from maneuvers, at the central railway station in Zurich April 5, 2013

America has too much violence in some areas. I would just say that you should really take murder and crime rates around the word with a huge level of skepticism. I know for example a lot of Latin American countries purposely under report their crime and murder rates for a variety of reasons. Mexico and Venezuela were especially bad about this. Same with rape rates in India and Pakistan. Many crime statistics are almost useless.
