setting aside the issue of the President of the United States calling out the National Guard to do local police work . . . what do people think about a Governor calling out the National Guard to do local police work? for example, Kathy Hochul's use of the Guard to patrol the subways and train stations in New York City.

If the kids in DC were mostly doing graffiti that would be a welcome change.

Literally go to any city and look at the neighborhoods. Come on amigo, this is one you can't hide. Denial can stand in the way of progress.

That is literally the play. There is no problem until you introduce "law enforcement" whom rather than calming things down, actually end up escalating the situation. Then the "law enforcement" side gets to claim the see-I-told-you-so defense and calling them thugs to justify the horrible scene that unfolded.

    Example:
Ax Handle Saturday, Jacksonville, FL 1960.
A group of young black activists staged peaceful sit-ins a local diner to protest white-only restaurants. Since this event was known in advance, local whites planted baseball bats and ax handles all around the area in bushes. The whites had a woman go into the restaurant and make a false accusation that she'd been attacked. Then 200 white men descended on the areas and laid waste to anybody darker than an almond. It was all a setup under the guise of maintaining the peace ...when in reality, it was the enforcers that fanned the flames.

Trump knows what he's doing. If a black/brown person resists in any way, he'll headline it as justification. It makes for good theater and riles up his base.

Conservative hell holes like Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama etc... need to be made safe for citizens to ride the subways eat at Cracker Barrel, walk their neighborhoods safely. In addition to the mess of feces, urine, needles etc.... need to be cleaned up. If you're against this then TDS is truly eating up your brain.

Trump is the biggest drama queen. He uses that BS that the city has been "overtaken" like we are at war, to try and justify sending in his troops. My nephew lives and works in DC and walks 15 minutes to work and back daily, and runs for miles around his neighborhood for exercise. He's never had any threats of violence or confrontations, and really likes it there. Heck, there are places and neighborhoods I'd never walk around in all over this country. You want to talk about crime and murder per capita, look no further than some of the smaller cities in Alabama, where walking around or jogging a few miles is more dangerous.

Here are the facts: In 2024, Washington, D.C. saw a homicide rate of 27.3 per 100,000 residents.

Compare that to 25 smaller cities with much more violent crime per capita. The most violent city, Anniston, is a town of 22,000 in northeastern Alabama. Anniston has a whopping 3,434 violent crimes per capita, or about one violent crime for every seven people.

Another Alabama town, Bessemer, ranks No. 2, and three others in the state are among the top 25, making Alabama one of the most dangerous states as well.

Go ahead, check out the statistics. Chances of rape, assault, burglary, murder, or what not below. There are lots of smaller cities where your chances of being the victim of violent crime are higher. Texas has the most amount of cities on the rapes per capita list.

Will you find a lot more homeless people in the biggest cities? Of course you will. Many are far more expensive to live in. That's a huge problem in our country when so many people can't afford a place to live, can't afford healthcare, get hooked on drugs, are too mentally unfit to hold a job, and are in dire straights. A big percentage of those folks are military Vets, which is sad. Many of them suffer from trauma and PTSD, or drug and alcohol abuse. Coming in, sweeping them off the streets, and moving them out of sight is a temporary solution. What happens then, when more and more Americans end up homeless and those already living in poverty when the cost of living keeps going up?

This action in DC will probably lead to the death of some minorities. . . .

    It's not drama, it's fascism.

I've been in DC three times in the past two years. Walked everywhere. It's subjective, of course, and I've walked through some dangerous places in my life that most people would **** their panties to be in, but I was OK with my wife and kids walking around in the main tourist areas in DC a few months ago.

    ...

No, Trump is NOT a drama queen. This is calculated.

Deploying troops against your own citizens is part of his broader plan to overthrow the government from within.

It's literally and exactly what every dictator does.

Trump isn't an idiot. Trump isn't a clown. Trump is consolidating power. America needs to wake up.

It's being poorly executed if that's the plan. I subscribe to the BS marketing theory, where headlines are the #1 priority. But to keep generating those headlines, he has to go increasingly authoritarian - so the end result might be the same.

Concentration of power is addictive and dangerous, especially in the hands of a vindictive and immoral leader who seems to be mentally declining by the day.

Have you ever heard of the 2nd amendment?

Read it again and this time pay attention to the word “militias” which is what the modern day national guard is which is essentially a militia run independently by the state for the state. It’s an independent security measure.

For years right wingers like the ones you propagate on behalf of have said that the 2nd amendment serves as a state and local level check against a tyrannical federal government.

So your example here is counter to the point you were trying to make as an activist serving Donald Trump to try and downplay his actions and gaslight us. When in fact when you look at the 2nd amendment and the state using the national guard/militias to avoid federal overreach into their local policing, it actually reinforces how dangerous what Trump is doing actually is.

Good points. It's already at the point where everything he does is being called a National Emergency so he simply do what he wants. National Emergency, National Emergency, National Emergency, National Emergency.

How about just fixing the system, funding more police, funding more police training, funding more social services to help people, providing affordable healthcare, funding more mental health and drug treatment centers, and providing more affordable subsidized housing in areas where rent is skyrocketing?

This latest National Emergency crap in DC is coming from a guy who acts like bombing limbs off children, shooting down kids seeking aid and food, and starving women and children isn't crimes against humanity. Slowly starving people to death intentionally isn't genocide. Well, Trump doesn't have a humane bone in his body. If it were up to him I have no doubt he'd take all the homeless out of every city in the country and put them all in some tent camp far away from tourists, just to present an appearance that everyone in America is happy and living well.

Someone needs to get some damn balls in that Republican party majority, refute his slander and lies, and man up to that power hungry wannabe dictator. I have absolutely no hope that they will though. Its gross to watch. I have absolutely no respect for a bunch of spineless cowards in the GOP who suck up to that orange creep with a smile like he's an orange slurpee.

Who can honestly say that the DC police and city leaders were doing a good job? Murder rates and violent crime rates are off the charts high -- #1 if DC were a state. Clearly they needed help, and if help is available via the National Guard, then why not use it? It benefits the people of DC greatly.

What I also like is that it takes away the Democrats ability to stir up (astroturf) protests in DC -- which is a summer favorite political pressure tactic of theirs. Trump one step ahead AGAIN.

I won’t rehash the whole “fear of a federal standing army” history since you clearly already know it.

From a legal standpoint, it’s straightforward: the National Guard under state control is not considered “military” in the same way as federal forces, so they can perform law enforcement duties without running afoul of the Posse Comitatus Act. That restriction only applies when the Guard is federalized.

From a checks-and-balances perspective, it’s a trade-off. State officials are more directly accountable to local voters, and any abuse of power at the state level tends to impact fewer people than if it were coming from Washington. That doesn’t make it immune to abuse, which is why the quality and integrity of leadership matter so much. but it does limit the scale of potential harm.
