Yep. Being from Houston I know PLENTY of folks with essentially climate science backgrounds (Geologists, RD Lab rats, etc.) who instead of using that knowledge, and skill to work for the government, make boatloads of money for oil and gas companies. Basically turning that knowledge into a weapon to further wreck out planet. Most of them though are friends and I know they find ways of justifying it (geologist friend thinks some of the underground carbon capturing science can be groundbreaking etc.), but it's the just the fact of the matter of govt. vs profit driven private industry. Nothing inherently evil about it necessarily, but it just is what it is. Now politicians in Congress especially.... fck yeah about 2/3 of people in Congress (especially the house) are there to enrich their pocketbooks and especially their egos. Citizens United turned DC into the Swamp, and Trump just unleashed the Gators.
I've learned to direct my anger at people who do what they do for the "love of the game". You friends work because they are probably paying off a mortgage, rent, paying bills, feeding kids etc. Corporate executives of these companies are doing what they do for the love of the game.. To maximize their power and clout. Hence why I don't have anger towards a employee for United Healthcare as an example and only the executives. People need to work to pay the bills. That isnt why corporate executives work.
It's Capitalism for better or worse.... but Capitalism only works mostly when there are rules. I hate that everything seems to go back to the Trump of it all, but the guardrails are only off because starting with Reagan, the GOP gutted the laws from the Supreme Court that led to what we see now with CEO's being able to even do what they do to even play their game. The game is almost played out and the visual of the front row of the inauguration is just evidence that what we are about to see is one last ditch effort at these zillionaires robbing the system blind their way out the door. I have a nagging suspicion that every one of those guys have a plan in place to move their residence to some island somewhere and live out there days far away from the sh$tstorm they leave behind there in the US of A. Pretty bleak I know but I just see too much evidence to have much confidence that there's some big turnaround coming. There could have been this past 20 years after Obama got elected, but the movement on the right funded by the billionaire class was too big of a match for the American people who made it known they wanted good change, and then were quickly shown to be mostly dumb enough to be fooled by FoxNews and Trump that it's actually brown people, gays, doctors, and scientists that are the cause of your pain... and stupid Americans bought that up, and here we are. Getting robbed for the last time.
@El_Conquistador and people like him are too selfish to understand some people are motivated by a higher purpose. They spent their childhood listening to Rush Limbaugh and others lambast government workers as lazy anti American slobs
Excellence is not rewarded in government jobs. Nor is poor performance penalized. Incentives and accountability are not there. No organization can develop strength if this is the case. What government employees impress you? DMV? TSA? IRS? USPS? US Forest Service in California? Federal Reserve? DOJ?
fire department, police, the military, professors at universities, social workers, cps, teachers …..you are just wrong. DD
Seems like funding that helps leeches like Elon have a larger customer base to maximize their return on investment. People need jobs to spend money. I know economics is hard.
So what? when I fly it's an orderly process. Do you want people making $60k checking bags? It's not an FBI investigation to screen passengers.
I will say that I have met very excellent people who worked in government roles in the US. One thing I seem to have noticed is that it seems more common to work for a while in government but then also in private industry (or the other way around) in the US than in Germany/Europe. So it's not necessarily a lifetime decision here to work in one or the other, which makes it easier to have excellent people in government roles also (even if they only work in them for a few years).
I think it's an assumption that government workers aren't punished for poor work and aren't rewarded for exceptional work. The post office certainly has a strong union and postal worker do have strong protection in terms of job security
You are oversimplifying complex issues AGAIN. Proifts dont insure equal access to care and you are ignoring advancements that have been made because the government was involved. Everyone pays. Taxes are important.
Dude, I am part of that world so I know exactly how it works. The investing world does not agree with you.. The private entities who actually fund research are very limited compared to the scale of NIH and NSF. And I am telling you companies, angel investors, etc WILL NEVER INVEST IN BASIC RESEARCH. You can/t depend on philanthropy alone. There's no ROI in that. They invest on things built up on top of many layers of research when it gets closer to being something that could turn a profit. But without the basic research, you will break the system because the whole industry is built upon government research grants. Eliminate those and you reduce the number of scientists and eventually will lead to a loss of American leadership in innovation. Don't be penny wise pound foolish. You basically are handing over innovation to other countries. A very stupid thing to do.
How else can we afford to give 500 billion to tech bros? You got to cut out clean water and cancer research for more crypto scams.
You give off mid level executive at a fortune 500 company vibes. A guy who's never created anything meaningful but believes financialization magically fuels the economy.
Which country has a more effective health care system. The USA or Costa Rica? Here is your AI generated answer. Costa Rica has better health outcomes than the United States, despite the US having higher income and health spending. Costa Rica's mortality rate is lower, and its life expectancy is longer. However, the US has better health outcomes for those with the highest socioeconomic status (SES) GOOD DAY.
*Unless they need an abortion. You're so full of s*** you can go days without eating...though I'm betting you don't go minutes without eating.
