yes, categories are based off windspeed...which I think Ike made a mockery of. i don't want a hurricane. i could live with a tropical storm, provided it's not an allison event (where it hits us twice!!). But no more hurricanes for a while, thanks.
yay, my thread came back alive! are you astros54 (something) dude? I don't want any hurricanes or nothing. We can't afford to repair anything with one income right now. Maybe tropical moisture will be welcomed...
Yeah, they're solely based on wind speed now.. they used to be (before this season) based on storm surge and wind speed... I personally think that was a bad move by the NOAA and NHC... but that's just me.. (I think it helps all the coastal cities... when you warn them about storm surge). Heh.... Like I said... I wouldn't want any damage or anything... like I explained with my other post... just the batch of rain would be nice.. I didn't mean to say I would like some harm done to people or anything.
Please don't troll. The wave isn't even off the coast of Africa yet you're already predicting it may form into a Hurricane and hit us already. Are you able to read life lines on hands as well?
If the storm hits on the western side of the metro area, then most of Houston would get the worst of the storm.
He said "no joke" so maybe he knows what he's talking about. I'm going to Home Depot now before the generators are all gone.
Yeah... I'm trolling? I take an interest in weather.. probably more than anything else in this world... It was a partly sarcasm btw when I was talking about saying it was actually coming over here... obviously I can't tell where the damn thing is going.. there's only one model that puts it in the Gulf of Mexico.. you don't have to get all serious about it... damn.. I'm just a poster on Cfans.. not a meteoroligist.. I still stand by what I said though... I think there will be some kind of storm coming our way before the hurricane season ends... that's just me. I don't know who that is.... and I guess you're not realizing what I'm meaning when I say I want a hurricane to come... this is my third post now in trying to explain that I just want the rain... a part of the hurricane to shed Houston and west of Houston so we can get some of the much needed rain. Cat 2 storms aren't that costly.. nor do they do what Ike did.. Ike was an abnormally big storm like MadMax said... I'm not hoping that we get a storm here so people can get hurt, lives can get in danger, or people are out of power for weeks... Why in god's name would I want that? I'm not a horrible person, just simply asking for some dire needed rain, that's all. Sorry if I offended you some way though.. That's not true at all... that just depends on the storm... Strong sides of the storm can be on either side, west or east, obviously I hope that if we were to get the storm, we'd get the least impacted side (in terms of winds). Once you get one of those babies.. you're set.. we have one that's been sitting there for a while, luckily we haven't had to use it in a long time... and hope we don't have to, but it's a great luxury for people to have a generator (if they know what they're doing and know how to use it). And thanks for getting some of my humor.
I don't take the internetz seriously, at all. Just sayin' don't start with the "scare tactics" like our local new likes to do. Do a search for the past 6 years on the Hurricane Season threads. Jeff is our man, and myself and a few others who are weather/weather underground/storm freaks post in them non stop with updates. Big fan of following storms, not so much on the "OMG PUT UP PLYWOOD, IT'S 2000 MILES AWAY, GET YOUR BATTERIES", which is why I loathe Neil Frank. I would dig a nice, soaking tropical storm, but no hurricane. I'm still waiting on insurance to fix my friggin' roof as it is. I can admit I had a blast in Ike, experiencing mother nature at its peak outside, and my lights came on at 6PM the next day even through our area was HEAVILY damaged. Being on a hospital grid does have its advantages.
no, Im afraid you are quite wrong on this count there is an established "dirty" side of the storm...that fact does not change from storm to storm. tropical systems in the northern hemisphere rotate counter-clockwise, so those on the east side of the storm get the worst of the surge and the winds due to the rotation of the storm.
My favorite time of the year. I'm looking forward to staying up late refreshing the page on weather underground website and watching the weather channel all night...
But I live in the comfort of southern California hahaha For me it is all fun until a storm threatens the Houston area. I still have family living in Houston, and I was worried during Rita and Ike.
Eh... What I heard from Steve Lyons (Hurricane Expert on TWC) was that in some instances... the dirty side (or the stronger side of the storm) can sometimes be on the western side of the Hurricane... Just like to add that the projection is still not known where it will go. We fear the red and the black one if this thing turns into a major hurricane.
TD2 is rapidly intensifying and has been named Swine Flu -- landfall is expected near the Texas coast.
I call it a fish storm. Nothing to worry about!! I love the hurricanes but not when they do damage to our property. It is amazing how they are formed and etc. Same thing with tornadoes.
We can probably relate in that sense... haha.. love em but not when they do damage to us.. This is going off to the north from most of other models now.... but then there's more activity coming from the coast of Africa... so it's beginning to get very active in the Atlantic.
I made a bet with a co-worker who likes hurricanes...but can't think of any terms if I win. I predicated less than 3 major storms to hit U.S. and looks like I am going to win. I told him to buy me candy if I win and he said it was lame. Any ideas for my term if I win?? It has to be clean since we have significant others because i know you guys would throw in dirty ones.
