There are many, many ideas that could be tried. I like the co-ops because they will DIRECTLY compete with private insurance. If the co-ops provide a good product at a fair price, it could be a game changer. The private insurance companies better provide a stellar product if they want to keep selling policies. The end result is that those without can get affordable coverage and those with private insurance can get more for their money. A win-win.
If it lowers costs, gets more people covered, and creates competition for the insurance companies, how can it not be a good first step? If that first step solves the problem, great, and if it doesn't, at least a lot of people are being helped in the meantime. Something constructive needs to get passed. Far too many people, including millions of children and the elderly, are going without coverage. If real reform can make it to the President's desk, even if it isn't what someone like me would prefer, that is better than this endless talking, this endless multi-million dollar assault on reform by the insurance lobby. They don't want reform. They make too much money with the system the way it is. They're comfortable with the status quo. As Mick and Keith said, if they will forgive me... You can't always get what you want But if you try sometime, yeah, You just might find you get what you need!
