I looked back in that thead and noticed the comments about Cato also.. I wonder what anyone thinks about it now? Was it Yao's presence that has made Kelvin better? or was it some other reason? I dont really care, as long as he keeps it up..
Is Big O Olajuwon!? I've been a fan of him and the Rockets for a while, but I had no idea he led the NBA all-time in career triple doubles by such a huge margin... Or is that someone else and I just made a huge ass of myself? Using context clues, it seemed like Will was talking about him, but I was just so blown away, I had to make sure.
Big O = Oscar Robertson. You should know him. Even I am too young to watch him play, I've read a lot about him and know that he's the king of triple doubles. Regular NBA fans should know him.
RocketGuy, Big O is Oscar Robertson, I believe. Funny this thread comes back up. I went to the game today, and thought about Yao hitting a triple double. I don't know if he'll top Magic and Big O, but I think it's reasonable he could top Wilt. It's a lot easier for a guard to get it done, since they have easier access to the ball. The center has to get the ball first, then hope the person they pass to hits the shot to get the assist. I'm not sure he will get a whole lot of 10 block games, since over time teams will stop taking it in at him.
Oscar had at least one season where he averaged a triple double. I think he was awfully close 3 other seasons to averaging a triple double.
O, OK, that makes more sense... yeah, I know of him, just don't know a lot about what his game was all about. Now I know at least a little more. Well thanks (to you too, Die Hard).
I just looked up Oscar Robertson's career stats, and man are they amazing. Based on stats he has to be considered at least one of the top five players of all time.
There's a five year period where Big O averaged a triple double. That's why he'll give you a look if you say Jordan's the greatest ever. Grant Hill was supposed to be a huge threat, but, you know...
I consistently give O big, big credit. Those numbers are amazing, even if you consider the league at that time (Russell and Chamberlain regularly pulled down 20 boards). By all accounts, assists weren't so generously recorded back then either.
The Big O was GREAT! He was a 6'5 guard when sub 6 footers abounded. He did everything. I saw him many times. He and West were rooks together. There was a great quote back in the day which went something like 'Jerry West is learning the NBA. Oscar Robertson is teaching the NBA!'
Didnt Oscar R. play with Wilt C. at Mil. Bucks?? That could help your game a bit. I wonder if anyone will ever average a tripple double again during the season.
Yeah, that's was before after he changed his name to Lew Alcinder. No it was actually Kareem. Personally, I started watching basketball in Magic's prime and Jordan's early years. I used to say Jordan is the greatest up until a couple of years ago. When you think about the things Magic and Oscar Robertson accomplished, its truly, unbelievable. Considering the teams Robertson regularly went up against, Russell's Celtics, and Chamberlain's Lakers, this guy was a real phenom. Averaging a Triple Double is ridiculous from a 6'5" guard. Bit of trivia, Oscar Robertson played on a High School team in Indiana that was beaten in the state tournament his sophomore by the "Hoosiers" movie team. Was it Chickwood or something, can't remember. Robertson's team went on to win the next two state championships.
Don't bring up Grant Hill!!! Just the thought of what's happened to him is horribly depressing... he was about to be one of the greatest (and my favorite) of my time. Hehe, I know I'm being hypocritical for bringing it back up, just had to get that little bit of frustration off my chest. I feel for ya, Grant... and Orlando... (But imagine if they had gotten Duncan too that year).
xiki: "The Big O was GREAT! [...] He and West were rooks together. There was a great quote back in the day which went something like 'Jerry West is learning the NBA. Oscar Robertson is teaching the NBA!" Here's another one: someone said Oscar was so great because if he had an open 16 footer, he'd work and make it a 15 footer. He was so fundamentally sound he made everything look easy. If there were one player I would ask Steve Francis to watch video of, it would be Oscar Robertson.
