Definitely catch a game at Yankees stadium since it won't be around much longer You might even be able to catch the NFL draft or NBA draft depending on when you come I would suggest one the city tours in the buses with no top Go to the top of the empire state building (day or night) Try to catch one of the many shows that are taped live on the weekdays here.....Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith, the Jon Stewart Show, David Letterman, etc....With most of these places you can do it online and the tickets are free If you're into photography, the International Center for Photography is real nice Also, the best view of the Manhattan skyline is at the Brooklyn Promenade in Brooklyn Heights The UN tour is nice as well and relatively cheap Visit Grand Central Station, it's close to the UN, and it has so many different types of restaurants and shops....you'll be amazed With all this in mind, I've lived in TX most of my life and just recently moved to NY, it's a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live here.....as another poster mentioned earlier, it's expensive as hell, old, and dirty....the subways are infested with rats and are filthy in general and life is just so much more difficult here.....when I ride the subway home, I can just see life in NY taking its toll on people....nobody smiles, people are rude, and they are bitter as hell....if it wasn't for the career opportunities, I would be chilling in Houston or Austin as we speak.
Rupert Gee's Hello Deli is a good place for a sandwich... and even better, the tourists haven't discovered it yet, so you can meet some real New Yorkers. Seriously, the best thing to do in New York is spend as much time as you can walking. You really get the vibe of the city and you can discover some great stuff that will never show up on a tourist guide.
Great advice. There's this incredible whorehouse I stumbled upon in the Belmont area of the Bronx. I would NEVER have found that in Frommers. But seriously, walk around and discover the city. The worst thing you could possibly do is take the train to each of the "tourist traps." Walking the city let's you find cool parts of town that you would have otherwise passed underground.
if you're gonna walk or roam the streets, be careful, because you could get mugged very easily....nyc crime makes houston look like an oasis of peace and tranquility
No offense, but who the heck really yearns to meet "real New Yorkers"? I've spent considerable amounts of time working in NY (with "real" New Yorkers) and find them generally to be unpleasant malcontents. If anything I'd suggest that people go to New York despite its residents, not because of them. If you don't believe me, just look at some of our representatives on the board (mc mark, thegary, SamFisher)!!
Um, that part of the post was an attempt at humor... The Hello Deli is next to where Letterman is taped and is on the show every other night... it's overrun with tourists.
I just recently moved here also and as someone already mentioned in an earlier post, the best thing to do is walk around the city. That's my favorite thing to do here. Sometimes just getting lost in the city will lead you to discover some interesting places.
If it's during daylight and you stay in the Midtown to the Financial District areas it seems pretty safe. I've never had any trouble there.
Yup, my thoughts exactly! Never met a pleasant 'native New Yorker' yet... Oh... and you can probably add my name to the list above
just booked 6 nights stay at the hostel international, 891 Amsterdam Avenue. 35USD per night. you guys know anything about it?
Hostels in general have a community bathroom at the end of every floor. Also you might be sleeping in military style barracks.
It might have been easier to find a place in Jersey for that price range. The accomodations will be alot nicer also for the money. A subway ride isn't too far from the outlying regions.
WRONG!!! NYC is the safest big city in America... the crime rate per capita in Houston is much worse, there are numerous studies and statistics that will prove my point... come on, I'm getting tired of defending my adopted city... theres just too much of this "be careful you might get mugged in NYC mentality" in the South... I have lived here for 7 years and discovered so many wonderful things about NYC, and first and foremost its safe to visit and safe to live...
This real new yorker is bemused at the humor flying over a bewildered Wacoite's head. Perhaps you should spend more "considerable" amounts of time here to be able to catch some local allusions, and lose the fanny pack plz.
actually, hostel international is one of the best hostel chains in term of cleanliness and comfort. which is why theyre a bit more expensive than others. ive used them in montreal, quebec city, vancouver, toronto. the one in new york is bunk beds, and i'm in a room with 3 other people. so its not too bad. i'm a poor student anyway, i'm not money like dadakota. i'm just wondering about the location. its on amsterdam avenue. i think its upper west side? and blocks away from central park and columbia uni. is that good?
I've scheduled a trip to NYC in late June to take my girlfriend to the Tim McGraw-Faith Hill concert and then propose to her just after midnight. Are there any cool restaurants that anyone can recommend (vegetarian food is a must) that I should try and get a reservation at? My quick websearch turned up One if by Land, Two if by Sea as the place to pop the question in NYC. Any thoughts?!?
youre taking her to NYC and you're proposing to her? jeez what the hell are you trying to get her to do? congratulations man. hope it all goes as smooth as you hope
