The Mrs. has a week long workshop in Charleston, SC in two weeks. I'm thinking about tagging along, but have no idea what's in Charleston. Anyone been, have any suggestions for a four day trip? Thanks in advance.
There are a ton of trees, but there is commercialism behind them. Well, some of them at least. Hit up downtown to walk around. There is an outlet about 40 minutes away. Them plan a whole day or two to Myrtle Beach.
Lemme list out to you the main Tourist attractions since i've been a few times: 1. Baptist Church 2. Methodist Church 3. Lutheran Church. 4. Plantation Museum . 5. Cemetary 6. The house where the only black family lives.
Possibly the worst layout of roads I've ever seen. Kind of like many sections of downtown Houston...you can see the freeway. It's right in front of you. But you can't get on it anywhere without going back and forth through the city.
It's a beautiful and historically interesting town. Great for about a day. (the slave markets are surreal) If you like to day trip and play golf it's awesome, lots of top courses.
Surprised there us so much hate. I like charleston a lot. Lots of history/architecture, golf, beaches, drinking/restaurants Don't go up to myrtle beach. Go to kiawah or folly
I lived in Charleston, SC for the summer in 1990. I returned for a few days in 2004. The town changed dramatically during that time. That said... If you like history, Charleston is amazing. As cheesy as it sounds, one of the historical "walking tours" with a knowledgeable guide is a must. When US history was re-written after the Civil War, Charleston was basically eliminated. It was the true political and financial epicenter of the early part of the US. The horse/carriage tours are kinda nice if you don't like walking. The Old Market/slave market can be kinda neat, too. Oh...and the Civil War started in Charleston. A boat out to Ft. Sumter is awesome. There are other Civil War forts scattered around the area. Look 'em up. The beaches are pretty cool also. Isle of Palms (to the north) is the fancier destination. I recommend Folly Beach (to the south). Totally chill, surfing/fishing/relaxing community. Hire a fishing boat out to Morris Island Lighthouse. It's a really cool trip. The "Low Country" cuisine is great. Most of the scene downtown has been commercialized. Seek out the tiny cafes. You won't regret it. Enjoy.
Some of the best beer I've ever had is brewed in Charleston. Best Coast and Holy City - check em' out. Everything has pimento in it in Charleston, that's like their version of the jalapeno. The only bar there I liked was the lion and the sand or something like that, who knows what it was called. But it's popular and it's named after two animals or an animal and something.... Other than that there's enough unique shopping, history, and sweets to eat to last about 3-4 days. It's downhill from there. Where would you be staying?
I went to visit someone there. I was told "DO NOT STOP ANYWHERE BEFORE YOU GET HERE." I didn't. I'm still alive.
