i give him by week 6 or the bye week. after that, replace him if he continues to struggle. what's andre davis doing nowadays? i feel like the veterans return kicks better because they won't try to get that home run plays every time. they're patience and get as much yard as possible young returner uses their speed a lot and always tries to return for a TD. that leads to not protecting the ball and tries to break tackles. which also could lead to fumbling the ball.
Count me in the never-been-impressed camp. Holliday is all speed and no vision. The great returns he had in preseason seemed to be the product of good blocking creating a nice trail for him to blaze through rather than him making good decisions. This is really apparent in instances when there isn't much of a path--he just kinda runs into the pile like he did in previous preseasons. I'll be happy if he gets better, but I'm guessing he won't. At best, I think he's a boom or bust type: maybe his speed will overcome his lack of vision and get us a few TDs, but the 9/10 times where that's not the case, he's going to give us really bad field position as we saw yesterday. I rather have a guy consistently bring it up to the 30 rather than someone who can bust one open but mostly puts the offense in a vulnerable position the rest of the time. As Kubiak is a conservative, control-the-clock, doesn't-like-specialists kind of guy, I imagine he accepts Holliday begrudgingly... for now!
Did you miss the one Steve Slaton brought it out of the end zone and then ran out of bounds at the 1? Trindon will be a game changer for this team, hopefully in a positive way.
For everybody saying Trindon should have stayed in the end zone....watch the play again. He bobbled it OUT of the end zone; he had to run with it after that.
i think he had already made up his mind to run it out and took his eyes off the ball (probably the reason why he bobbled it ).. but yeah once the ball bounced out of the end zone he had to move it forward.. i think people are criticizing him for his decisions.. he had another return where he came out and got stuff below the 10-yard mark.
I feel like it is the fans normal reaction to that play since the announcer was saying he should have stayed in. He bobbled it and had to go with it. He is supposed to be looking to return any kick, so I don't really see any "bad decisions" on his part.
I used to have a huge fear whenever Jacoby was fielding punts... but over time, he seemed to get better as far as being careless with the ball, even put together some good returns. By the time the playoffs hit last year, that fear had nearly subsided completely... then that completely asinine play happened. A good rule of thumb is that if you have fear whenever a returner fields a kick... he probably shouldn't be your returner.
He was looking to run it all the way... hence he took his eyes off the ball, and muffed it. Either that or he has the worst hands ever. Either way, those are bad qualities to have in a returner.
Well at least they have a soft schedule the first month, so I think they can afford to give him some more time to develop. But if he's still making mistakes by the time the team has to play Baltimore, GB, Detroit, etc, then you need to find someone else. It's possible he was just trying too hard to prove his worth and impress the home crowd.
He knows that he can be cut at anytime, especially with Sharpton eventually going to need a roster spot once his PUP time runs out. Holliday will hopefully spend this week training along with the rest of the special teams players, because they were all aweful on Sunday. He knows and the coaches are telling him, he needs to at least get the ball beyond the 20 yard mark if he wants a job. He will do what he can.
Kubiak didn't sound too happy with Holliday during his coaches show yesterday. He said "we may have to re-evaluate." Ouch... It's funny, every time Holliday was mentioned to Kubiak during the preseason, it just seemed like Kubiak was very skeptical. Always saying stuff like "well, if you only do one thing, you better be really special" and no mention of battlefighting, etc. I don't think Kubiak really wanted him taking up a roster spot.
Neither did I... just refuting all those people willing to "give him a chance" to see if he "improves". Jacoby improved... hell, he's still returning punts for Baltimore (a team that will force several punts). And yet he was still able to make bone-headed decisions as a veteran, in a playoff game.
The Texans have consistently had mediocre or worse special teams play. They may have a few guys who play really well on special teams, but as a unit they have never been good. Kickoff coverage has consistently been poor, return game has been spotty at best, they get beat easily by fakes, etc. Yet somehow they've never made a change to ST coaches and the ST coach is always praised as one of the best in the business. Baffles me.
Hmmm... Take away the past two years and the Texans have been consistently in the top 10 on KRs and led the league TWICE. Kick coverage has consistently been in the top 10 as well. Trindon Holliday will take one to the house soon, hopefully everybody quits whining after that.
yeah the ball took a funny bounce on him and came out of the end zone.. i like the fact that he's being aggressive and i believe he will take a couple of returns to the house this year.. i'm glad the mistakes he made didn't end up costing the victory so it's all good.. he'll play better sunday against the jags
Not if he continues to fumble. If he has 5 kicks returned for TD's, but also has 5 fumbles which result in points for the other team then what's the point?
