Exactly ... I think they are just belittling themselves. The Horns-down is more important than their own tradition? Wow... cool.
here's one. when the Arkansas Razorbacks beat Texas State University in the first round of the tournament back in 1995, Nolen Richardson walked off the court with Horns down. when he got to his press conference he talked over and over again about how many times he had beaten Texas. i can't stand Nolen Richardson.
Ahmad Carroll, formerly of the Packers, did a Horns down when he returned a INT for a TD. In Lambeau Field.
yeah that's hilarious. i was watching the post game show with the gameday crew at kyle field and i saw BOTH sooners and aggies doing the horns down. WTF? the game was over an hour ago and people are sticking around to get on natl tv to do the horns down?
You know what, the Horns players should start doing an upside down Horns sign once they stomp on your butt. Take the symbol back and mock those who try to mock it. Doesn't matter which way you show the sign--upside down, rightside up, sideways, show them we are still kicking your no self-respecting, no own team respecting, no own tradition respecting, butt.
The problem is they do it in situations where Texas should be non-existent (as in the OU-A&M game). At some point you have to start creating an identity based on who you are and not who you're not.
Yeah yeah, you'll find rotten fans everywhere. Thanks cap'n. But hey, just because every school in the lower half of the united states hates UT doesnt mean that we all have sour experiences dealing with UT administration and fans, do we? Oh, wait... I guess that is the only consistent thing throughout this whole mess.. Stay classy and the horns will point downward a lot less often I'd bet.
I loved Nolan and hated seeing him gone from the UA basketball team, so many memories. The reason why Arkansas fans and players alike still do it is because a great sense of rivalry is still felt from those old SWC days when UA and UT were in the same conference and powerhouses in that conference as well. That is why it meant so much to play those games 2 and 3 years ago, it renewed that rivalry for a short period of time. People in Arkansas still feel that because we are not too far removed from those days, I mean it is not like it was 50 years ago. I am sure Arkansas was a big rival to you guys to but you always had A&M and Oklahoma to fall back on because those have been your rivals forever. When UA joined the SEC who did we make a rivalry with, Ole Miss? Miss. St.? Well there is the LSU game played for the Golden Boot but still, there isn't any built in tradition there like there was with Texas in the SWC. We still feel that here but like I said you guys have plenty of other great rivalries to go around.
heh. You want to look for 'consistent things'? Find any University that has winning sports programs and you will find haters. If UT sucked, no one would bother with the Horns-down, there would be a lot fewer rivalries with UT, and a lot less people who have a 'problem' with the school. So maybe the haters should just ponder a bit on their own personal issues. cap'n
Look when you beat THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, I can understand throwing the horns down, even if I don't like it. When you beat TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY...you shouldn't be throwing horns down. Because they have nothing to do with the Horns. And it just makes you look silly. By the way...the Hogs are awesome this year. I think they're even better than their ranking.
It goes beyond sports, whether winning, losing, or drawing. Some people have trouble understanding that I guess.
Well some of us went to more than 1 University and have a much better frame of reference than others. I went to UT undergrad and went to a school that hates UT for my Masters. It little if nothing else to do with anything other than UT's winning. If UT did not win, there would be no issues. Again, what winning program does not have haters? It's more a reflection on the haters than the hated.
Very true. Maybe I was wrong about what you were getting at, this is kind of ridiculous. The consistent things are success (UT in the big 3 mens sports), envy and exposure. UT fans treat others better than vice versa in my experience. My wife is an Aggie, every 2nd chant or song or whatever is about beating UT. And I think their fans (Aggies) are not as nasty as Razerbacks, Sooners, Raiders, etc, because their is this underlying military tradition behind it. My perception anyway. Just not the same the other way. Texas doesn't have to look up at anyone, they are the big dog, by and large are not as nasty to other fans. As for classiness, UT may not quite be like Cornhuskers or LSU Tigers (who just love to party and tailgate in that unqiue, festive, Lousiana kind of way) in welcoming others, but classier than most.
Last year we were at Disney World. The guy behind me in line had an Oklahoma State T on, so I feel some comraderie being from the Big 12/same part of the country and strike up a conversation. Now he wasn't too bad, but it turns out his wife was a Sooner and the bile was turning her green (that UT had beaten OU). I mentioned that they'd had quite a few wins in a row, but it was not enough for her. She actually scowled at me because I went to UT...with me 4 year old daughter standing in line to see Mickey. Unbelievable.
