Im guessing this would be worse than Osuna. Playing with fire especially considering the team chemistry with players like Bregman
In terms of the pitching staff, those are my thoughts as well. Solid top 3. Brown and Arrighetti have settled down and pitched better as of late, and Garcia and McCullers aren't too far away. Between those seven, I have to think there's a strong 5-man rotation even without Javier and Urquidy. If they miss the playoffs, it won't be because they didn't sign Bauer. It will be because of the awful start of the season the pitching staff had and how poor they've been hitting with RISP at times this season. But there's definitely a path to the playoffs still, and they don't need to make horrible PR moves to find it.
It's this same sense of empowerment that allows the hot dog and hot dog bun companies to not coordinate the number of items in their packages.
I would love to bring Bauer in, because that makes us the most hated team again. And we thrive on that.
You'll only start watching a team that has gone to 7 consecutive ALCS if they sign a pitcher that hasn't played an MLB game in 3 years?
Bauer has no respect for anyone, including himself. Watch the clip of Bregman when asked if he and Bauer were really friends (insinuating that their online hate is something made up or less than it appears) from a few months ago. His words, tone, and body language. Maybe it's just him and trading him would prevent an issue. Maybe more players agree or at least support Alex. The bottom line is, IMO, signing Bauer would hurt this team much more than help it regardless of how good he actually pitches. A cancer in the clubhouse can end a season faster than any injury. And look at the situation - the Mariners blew a 7 run lead yesterday and are 24th in runs scored. The Rangers are in a championship hangover season and unable to compete. The Astros have had TERRIBLE pitching injuries and luck but still are only 6.5 games back. Last year they were 6.5 games back as late as June 24 and that Texas team was much better than either Seattle or Texas this year. I still have hope.
You do realize that he admitted to choking her unconscious and then having anal sex with her unconscious body and repeatedly punched her in the face and vagina. It gets into some real dicey areas. As far as I know the Astros have zero interest. Granted it was last year, but the last reports I had heard was that he was not especially impressive when scouts saw him. Now that could have changed but it’s going on 4-5 years since he was in the big leagues. Bauer has a strong social media presence and I have seen some of his pitching videos geared towards younger players. In those videos he comes across as nice. However - keep in mind that while he had a few teammates that liked him, he also burned a lot of bridges with players and I suspect that is part of why he isn’t back.
Innocent or guilty, whatever - the last thing we need is any player with this kind of baggage that might add to any controversy that could arise. Keep shopping at the mall
Also - what isn’t considered enough is that Justin Verlander is a big feminist supporter and was irrate when the Astros traded for the domestic abuser Jays closer. It caused issues in the clubhouse and Verlander wouldn’t talk to him. I would assume that Verlander would also be upset with Bauer. Also Bauer isn’t likely to shut up if he is on the Astros. Yeah - the Astros could use a #2 type starter but the cost is extremely high.
Personally, I don’t care about the off the field issues. His suspension is over and he’s clearly not going to have any legal issues. At the end of the day, I don’t watch sports because the players are “good people”, and if he was truly the difference between us winning a World Series or not making the playoffs at all, I would be all for signing him. That said, I’m not sure his performance will even outweigh the negative from the chemistry issues, especially with Espada at the helm. On a separate note, for all you saying you would stop rooting for the team, stop watching, root for Bauer to lose every start, etc…I better not catch you in the Texans sub. The team that turned a blind eye to what Watson was doing because he was their star QB. Not to mention, it’s a league full of criminals including legit murderers in the past.
So hypothetically he’s starting game 7 of the World Series for us…you’re rooting for him to get bombed and take a L?
I understand why you would feel this. I wouldn’t go that far, but I’d be pretty pissed if they sign him. This wreaks of desperation and makes me feel like the people pulling the strings are doing it wrong. I'm sure the thinking is they could get him on the cheap without giving up prospects. The team doesn’t have money to spend without making trades. You’d have to think that this is would be terrible for the clubhouse, no?
I'll root for him to get bombed and taken out early, but Astros still ends up with the W....if he signs here (doubtful).
Hell yes, bring him on, we need pitching and his case was tossed out. He would be a major add to our team. Just play ball and win. DD
Man, I’ve always appreciated your passion for being a fan whether or not I’ve agreed with some of your takes. I’ve always felt like differences in opinion is healthy and sparks some good conversation. That said, I don’t understand why you’re ok with the Bauer’s and KPJ’s of the world. Bauer admitted beating her unconscious and did things to her while knocked out. Imagine that being your daughter. Horrific, no? No amount of W’s are worth that to me.
Well, hypothetically your hypothetical would never come to pass because hypothetically my hypothetical would mean he'd never hypothetically sniff a hypothetical postseason roster, much less avoid being hypothetically cut after 6 or so hypothetical starts. Hypothetically.
