I always get in trouble talking about Barker, but I can’t help myself… I like the guy’s playing and he’s very good at what he does. He always plays a nice tight groove and plays in the pocket with a lot of feeling. But I just don’t get the fascination with all of these videos of him playing time with rap songs. It’s really not that impressive. Back when I was teaching, most of my high school kids could do that. Again, I don’t hate the guy and I don’t think he “sucks” per se. From what I understand, he continues to teach kids drum lessons, even after making it so big – and I totally respect that about him. I was heartbroken when I heard about his plane crash and I’m ecstatic that he made it through all that rehab and is back doing what he loves again. But I honestly don’t understand why people get off on these videos so much. I always watch them and wait in vain for something interesting to happen, but it never does. Just my flea bitten opinion.
Well in my case it's not really the video per say, It has more to do with the Rap songs he remixes. You having a music background of course would give you an inside angle on his technique and overall skill. For example his Soulja boy remix. If someone would have asked me how you could make that song toreable, I would have said it was impossible! To me soulja boy set rap back 50 years, yet I think Barkers drums on his remix outweigh the original's crappy hook and beat. I guess it's the sense that someone with talent can make crap and turn it into something I would play on my ipod.
i'm not a rap fan and don't remember ever hearing the original, but damn, i'd roll down the neighborhood with this song blasting. oh yea, either Barker starting lifting weights and had a skin graft all over his body or that's someone else playing those drums. looks nothing like him.
So you like the video(s) not so much because of his playing itself, but because of what his playing adds to the songs. Okay, I guess I can buy that. You now have my permission to enjoy the videos.
This: I have conflicting feelings about Barker as well. He is talented, yes, but how he is lauded as this super-great drummer-spawn of the pantheon of great drummers is just....unwarranted. What I'm saying is that he's good, but he's not that good.
The unbearable was directed more towards the Soulja boy and other remixes he's done. Like I said in a previous post It's the Kanye and weeze parts that I can't listen too. No hate just preference.
Yeah, I was pretty disappointed with the Kanye verse, but I haven't really listened to much of his stuff since College Dropout when he was still writing from experience, and not money/cash/hoes. Usually thats how it goes, a debut album is usually hard to top.
I like what Barker adds to the song. That said, drum corps drummers are some of the best in the world.
dream theater drummer Mike P is my favorite by far. Barker is great but as others stated he is overrated. Listen to this guy. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0m19T4A8JtI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0m19T4A8JtI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
