Serious question - have you ever traveled outside the state of Texas?

I doubt you could make it through baggage claim.

I loved Israel. Beautiful place, interesting people, and the history in Jerusalem is palpable. I was detained at the airport on my way out for about an hour or so, but it wasn't scary or anything, they just asked me some questions and then I was on my way. I wasn't handcuffed or anything, just scrutinized more closely than others.

If you decide to go (and safety should not be a major concern) then make sure to see the old city of Jerusalem and the Bahai gardens in Haifa, in addition to anything else that interests you of course.

Glynch, regardless of your political views which I completely disagree with, I think that if you try and look at the people and the culture you will be amazed. I'm not there all the time, but my house is always open and I will be happy to show you around to see the variety and richness of this small country.
From the Golan heights in the north, to the sea of Galili, green and hilly. Mainly farms and smaller villages, Christian Arabs, Muslims, Druize, cherkesi who fled to here from Georgia , armanian who fled here, Bahais which are being percecuted in so many counties and build here their amazing shrines (most unique and interesting religion they have).
Then on the Mediterenean coast we can go from Haifa to Tel Aviv, which considered to be one of the best cities to party in Europe, fine dining and beutiful beaches. From there we can go to see Jerusalem with its 2000 years of history that you can feel in every stone and every narrow street. You can go and visit Ramalla the west bank, I will most likely get linched there so I'll pass.
Going south you can't miss the Ramon Crater which is a unique geomorphologic phenomenon, you would think youre on the moon. Continue and going down to the Dead Sea, the lowest place in the world, and then continue to Eilat in the red sea for spectacular dives.
All this in less then 500 miles.
From there I used to always take people who visited me to Sini in Egypt which used to be my favorite spot in the world (and Ive been in every continent and sailed in every ocen), but unfortunately El Qaida and ISIS took control there so it is no longer safe.
In any case Im sure that you and your lovely wife will enjoy every minute of your trip.
Regarding going through customs- it can be annoying, but have you tried to enter the US without an American passport? Not such a pleasent experience, especially if your trying to be cute with them.
    Safe travels, wherever you go
