I have traveled a lot alone including backpacking by myself through Indonesia. A lot of this depends on how comfortable you are with yourself and with meeting new people. One thing that I recommend is talking to other travelers, whether at hostels, hotel bars, tourist sites or even while riding buses, trains and etc.. Then you can pick up tips and in some cases find people to travel with temporarily.

As far as language it always helps to learn a little of the local language, even it it just to say "Thank You." A lot of people don't expect foreigners, particularly Americans, to speak the local language but they appreciate it if you try.

    lol

    Love traveling. Great advice.

Also to any others that want to travel. Always check out the local markets especially in Asia. Bring camera when you do.

Always learn to say please and thank you and yes and no. I also learn some history before I go of the region. People love that you know some and will show you sights that nobody usually goes and see.
