I thought instead of just making a thread specific to my upcoming vacation, I'd just start a general one where maybe people can ask which steakhouse they should try on a business trip in Omaha or whatever.

The wife, kiddo and I are embarking on a week-long road trip to Raleigh in early March. Our drive should take two days with one sleep stop each way. We are going to stop in Montgomery for the night on the way there (going I-10 to I-65 to I-85 to I-40). Coming back, I'm hoping to have one day/night in Asheville (beer!) before we head back through Knoxville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Jackson, Shreveport and down 59 so we can show our daughter her mother's alma mater Nacogdoches.

I'm looking to see if anyone has any recommendations for the following:

    1. Places to eat around Mobile/Biloxi around late-lunch/early-dinner (our first meal on the way there will be Darrell's in Lake Chuck).
    2. Parks/beaches along either way so that the kiddo can get out and run around.
    3. Places to eat in Raleigh. I think Time-Out is the only place I know for sure I want to try.
    4. Places to eat/drink in Asheville as well as any good hiking spots around that area.
    5. Any places/hotels to avoid.

    Good thread.

We're doing our first cruise in May. Fort Lauderdale to Key West, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios. Any excursion recommendations appreciated. I'm thinking we'll do Stingray City in Grand Cayman.

Will keep this in mind when we make our trip to Hawaii in two years. Saving that one to coincide with my 10-year anniversary at work (four-week sabbatical and $1500 travel voucher!).

Where can I get the best cheesesteaks in Philly? I'm taking a day trip on Saturday, and cheesesteaks are one of my favourite foods.

This is on the way there (or back) and well worth the detour unless you're driving a camper or something like that.

I just picked up my car from Mobile, AL. I wish I had driven to Birmingham since I was nearby. :-(

How about here in Houston. I went to elevation burger near the kirby area. Have to say hands down the best burger and fries I've ever eaten.

Yall should give it a try.

Tupelo Honey Cafe in Asheville, NC is really good - southern comfort food.
