My view of Houston has changed quite a bit since I now have basically confined myself to the Village/Uptown/Midtown/Kirby/Memorial/Heights areas. If you live in Katy/Sugarland/Spring/Humble/Baytown/Pearland/Pasadena/Clear Lake then yeah, Houston probably sucks big fat donkey balls from your perspective.
I live in Katy and both it and Houston. Picking up a crawfish lasagna on the way home from the cajun meat market two minutes away from the house in Falcon Ranch.
i grew up in alief. and let me tell you haters something, there is no more beautiful or culturally important place on earth.
The fact that they rank Austin as #3 for food is an absolute joke - which in turn makes their rankings a complete joke as well. The restaurants in Austin suck overall.
They didn't rank them. People responding to a survey using a pre-selected list of 25 citites ranked them.
exactly what i've been trying to say.... the difference between the burbs and living inside the loop is like night and day.
oh. For the record, Z Tejas and Ranch 616 were my favs when I was living there. Salt Lick has some damn good BBQ too.
Granted, I lived in Austin 25 years ago but the two Austin restaurants I miss the most are Mother's Cafe and Threadgills. When I lived there, there used to be a BBQ joint right near the intersection of Barton Springs Road and South Lamar. If I remember correctly, it was called Mama's, but I could be wrong since it was sooooo long ago. The place has long since closed. Anyway, when I was a student, on Monday nights, they used to have all you can eat beef ribs for $7.95. It was expensive back then for a UT student, but a nice splurge (this was back when you used to drive through the Party Barn on Guadelupe, unload a case of empty Shiner longnecks, and pick up a full case for $6.95 ). Anyway, whenever we went, there would be a big table full of UT varsity football players with a big pile of stripped rib bones in the middle of the table. Aaaah....memories....
If he ever had time to go out. He´s working for Thomas Keller at Bouchon, and that pretty much rules his life right now. Good list, and thanks for the recs. Wink, Mirabelle (I think, may have it confused with another), Fonda, Driskill & Uchi would probably be my favorites. Haven´t tried Ranch 616 yet, but have heard great things. Yep, they had problems retaining kitchen talent starting a couple of years ago. The owners, especially the trust fund kid, are more concerned with pub & the ¨see & be seen¨ aspect of the place. Sad. My bro headed the kitchen next door at Enoteca when it opened, so we always ate there. Never had a bad meal, not sure if that´s representative of the average dining experience or not, since we always just said ¨what should we eat today?¨ & let him do his thing. Good deal, man. updawg: what´s the menu at Buenos Aires like?
Busy. Not quite the French Laundry, but what is? He moved out there about the same time I left the country, so hopefully this spring we´ll head that way and check it out.
