I'm talking about Austin. You get a mix of the Peruvian, Panamanian, Mexican, Spanish, Puerto Rican, etc here. I'm sure for Cubans, Miami is the best place to be.
New York City is absolutely great for a visit, but it sucks ass for living. In fact, I'd rather live in Dallas than move back to that s***hole again. (The suburbs outside NYC are fine, though.) Also, I just got back from a week in San Francisco, and I gotta say, that place is meh. The giant hills sucked, the attractions were merely okay, the food was mediocre (and expensive), and the people there were among the weirdest I've ever encountered (and I've lived in Austin). Plus, on top of it all, because the place was very touristy, I had to deal with a large influx of stupid, mean foreigners with zero manners.
I feel sorry for you. Seriously. I know lots of people in the same boat as you, and it absolutely sucks. I have no kids, but I pay my HISD taxes every year, and they are easily the biggest portion of the property taxes we all pay.
Sadly though, incidents of racism remain constant, given that the Redskins are still - well - the Redskins.
In Austin? Really? Because that sounds much more like a description of Miami. Colombians recently overtook Cubans as the largest group there, and there are plenty of Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, Ecuadorians, Dominicans, Brazilians, Spaniards and others.
I'll cast a vote for Chicago. One of the prettiest and most easily traversable big cities I've been too (in the US). Nice attractions, museums, etc. Caveat is that I would NOT want to live there in winter. Way too cold.
yeah, lots of strong latin community here. lots of them being internationals coming for school, work. I know some people who work for advertising agencies specifically for Latin Americans accounts. Austin has a big Carnival celebration every year.
Excluding the international students and mexican-americans, Austin's Latin community is about as big as Buenos Aires' black community. That is so true. You get real latinas and not that watered down mexican-american spanglish kind. I agree though on the sprawl and pretentious nature of the city. In fact it's almsot like a cheap knock off of L.A. But the reason I would move to Miami is 1) It's like living in Latin America 2) Closer to latin America (four hr plane ride to Bogota, Colombia) 3) Evryone speaks spanish 5) The beaches are nice 5) the bikini clad women on the beaches are nicer.
- and look at what HISD is in return. What an absolutely rotten, terrible excuse for a school system. We shouldn't have to pay for it. And for the amount that we pay, HISD should be a bazillion times better than it is.
you have to think of it in relative terms of the size of the city. Austin still under a million people.
The problem is that it is an inherently political place where nobody is held responsible for anything. It's the 180 degree opposite of the corporate world.
I have to cast a vote for Chicago too. What an awesome, awesome city. I'd live there every summer if I could.
I just moved up here from Houston...it's been great so far, although winter is creeping up (although a lot slower than usual, from what I've been told)
no ...crawl back to houston with your tail between your legs because you couldn't hang with the big dogs.
