I'll be going to Belize in a few weeks. Interested in visiting some Mayan pyramids and cave tubing. Any suggestions on other cool stuff to do while I'm there? Places to visit? Thanks
Take lots and lots of money. Expect to pay close to $20 for a 6 pack of beer. Stay away from local cabs, have the resort set everything up.
Local cab drivers are fine, just never flag down a cab at night. If I am going to need a cab ride after dark, I always arrange it during the day and pay the guy to wait for me. I have had multiple friends get robbed inside a (fake) cab. They all arranged cab rides after leaving bars late at night. And things are a lot cheaper if you stay out of the resorts altogether. All-inclusive resorts suck.
Also, I never get into a cab if the driver is trying to get me in (the hard sale, so to speak). I ALWAYS choose my own cab.
I've never been to a resort there. A friend owns a winter home there and this is what I was told although I always drove a scooter or his Jeep. While it's gorgeous it's just not a place I really ever enjoyed. If I'm going to the Eastern Caribbean I always stick with BVA or the UVA. I've been to Peter Island the past two years but no Caribbean this year. Hitting Peru in August, freaking stoked.
If ruins are your thing, Tikal will blow away anything you'll find in Belize. Where are you going? Big diff between the cayes, mainland, and Belize city. (hint -- pass on Belize city).
Go to the ATM cave tour (actin tunichil muknal) where the natives would do sacrificial burials to appease the rain gods It's a night time tour through pitchdark cave rivers.. you just have your helmet lights as a group And they ask you to turn them off at a point to feel what 100% darkness is
