First - this doesn't really pertain to the topic. I wasn't talking about social contagion - certainly not social contagion in the very odd guidelines addressed in that study. The idea that children choose to come out as transgendered to avoid being a sexual minority makes zero sense, as being transgendered is a minority.

Also getting participants from various websites is......well, not reliable in the data field.

You are certainly entitled to believe that puberty blockers and chest surgery are in the best interest of children that suffer or claim body dysmorphia - and maybe down the road science will prove that to be the case. However, at this point the science doesn't support it - the studies done are both limited and flawed and are largely split on the topic. So no - science doesn't support providing puberty blockers and surgical intervention for minors....... the correct answer is that we know that puberty blockers have nasty long term side effects - and we know that those that suffer from gender dysmorphia are at risk from mental health issues - and it is possible that the use of puberty blockers and surgery will be beneficial long term, but we really don't know at this point what the long term costs or benefits are.

This is again the canary in the coal mine. Over the next 20 years we are going to see more and more of this. Gender and sexuality and puberty and dysmorphia and depression all are complicated in their causes and impact...

I've never supported surgery for minors - so want to clarify that right off that bat.

The science is young on this and studies are underway - and it's not an easy thing to study. But there are numerous directional evidence that when taken together as a whole does point to gender dysmorphia being real and not a "phase". The vast vast vast majority of those who transition do not regret it, so the system should be geared to preventing those small percentage from transitioning, not stopping the rest from having a semi-normal life for themselves.

The kids have to go through a long period of psychotherapy before they transition to in fact make sure it's not a phase. I think partents and trained professionals should be making these decisions, and not an uneducated public / politicians.

Understood on surgeries. I thought you supported chest surgery.

There is no credibly doubt that gender dysmorphia is a real.

It has long been accepted by the DSM and the CCMD and the treatment can include living the life of the other gender and other things. It isn't curable, and that includes transitioning - it isn't a cure but it is a treatment and sometimes is an effective treatment. However we also know that people are misdiagnosed as well.

Where I disagree with you is that we DON'T know how many people transition and regret it. We also have more people transitioning, and transitioning at an earlier age and we do not know the long term impact of that. There are a lot of impediments to collecting accurate data, and I have discussed those before.

Also - the reality is that there are people, including children that are being put on puberty blockers after a single visit, and some of those visits are not even in person. We also know that puberty blockers have long term health effects. There are even some doctors that claim that isn't true, but the studies say otherwise. Even then, the information is very limited because in the past the treatment was far less common and enough time hasn't passed.

There are children that go through many years of treatment and then are put on puberty blockers, but that is FAR from being universal.

What would you want to see change? Some options are:

a- Blanket bans on all transgender care for minors that involve surgery and hormone treatments (Republicans).
b- Blanket bans on all transgender care for minors that involve surgery.
c- Regulation to ensure better adherence to WPATH standards of care for transgender care (I support this).
d- It's perfectly fine, nothing needs to change.
    e- ...

Kids being put on puberty blockers without first undergoing therapy and evaluation is medical malpractice. I'm totally against that and that should be controlled with regulation. But a pathway for someone to undergo puberty blockers and transition (sans surgery) should exist - and that pathway shouldn't be closed off for political reasons which is what is happening.

First good thing I have seen from Newsom, ever. Even for him, this was too extreme, and he knew it would have come back to haunt him. Purely tactical move most likely, but kudos to him.

When Newsom is less extreme than some of the D&D posters here, it should probably be a wake-up call to them...but of course, it won't be.
