That's because Clyde had retired. There was no other sg...sam mack was a scrub.

The only way Nachbar can earn playing time is if he just lights it up during garbage time, and that's probably not going to happen. He's got a long season ahead of him unless unforseen events come into play to give him an opportunity.

I think the rockets had in him a matt bullard three point specialist in mind...and if this guy becomes that, I think that would be a lot.

    NewYorker,
You’re funny. And all this time I thought your posts were serious.

The gig is up the second you imply that the Rockets don't expect anything more than a Matt Bullard 3pt shooting specialist out of Boki. Thanks for the good laugh.

BTW can you here me laughing? I am laughing at the pathetic Knicks organization. Let me know when they have a decent team again and we can have a good debate. Until then, thanks for the laugh.

    NewYorker,

I hope you know that some of the post should be taken with a grain of salt...
    Here's an example...

    Yaofan: "Yao for President!!!" :)

NewYorker: "What, are you crazy!? You Rocket fans are such a joke. You
get an unproven 1st pick and you automatically want him to be the
President of the USA! Get real!"

    ...a few days later...

Highskcoolball: "Yao might get rookie of the year!" :D

NewYorker: "Man, you guys are such blind fans! Do you really think
that Yao -- an unproven player -- will just automatically get ROY!?
No, he will struggle. It will be years before he will adjust to the NBA!
You Rocket fans are a joke!"

...remember, some fans just post because they are happy. I call
those posts "youthful exuberance" posts. I don't take them seriously,
    and neither should you.

If a 15 year old kid posts a "happy comment about Yao" don't take
    it serious!

Nachbar is more than just a shooter. He's a basketball player.

He can drive and dunk, he can handle the ball, run the floor...he's a prototypical
european player of TODAY. Not YESTERDAY.

Mark my words, more international players will be drafted the next
few years because they are *ready* for the NBA, compared to HS ballers,
or NCAA players w/one year of college.

Pretty much the response I expected from someone who has two basic operational modes:

    1) Houston sux as a sportstown.
    and
    2) None of you are as smart as I am because you're all a bunch of irrational homers.

I stopped reading anything you posted at about your 10th post - your "Bring back the Dream" thread which quickly degenerated into OP Mode #1.

Please keep using your bassackward posting style - it makes it easier for the rest of us identify and page past it quickly. :p

New Yorker:- Thoes in the know ( they kept it very low key) said prior to the Draft that Nachbar was the BEST European Prospect for 02. I don't bet on players just coming into the NBA, one way or another! I don't degrade players, in such a speculative way that you have treated Nachbar. If you had a modicum of patience, you would wait at least till the end of the preseason, prior to expounding your negative view on a player, totally unknown by you and me alike!

    Gator,

If you stop reading my posts, then why are you replying. Go back to ignoring what I write. I never claimed to be smarter than anyone here. I might be an A-hole, but I'm not a snob as your defensive nature projects. I'm critical of Houston and a skeptic in general. If that's enough to make you ignore what i write, good, just ignore it then because you haven't made a single reply regarding the topic. These personal attacks are just a weak attempt at ego boasting. Give it up.

    Yetti,

Hey, I never said Nachbar would be a joke, I just said he has a lot to prove. Besides, we're talking about a guy who averaged 13.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in the ITALIAN LEAGUE last year. He wasn't even the best player on his team. There's tons of reason to think this was a Rudy go Bryce Drew on us pick. They went over there to scout another player (his teammate) and saw him instead.

Here's the skinny I got on him:
POSITIVES: Nachbar is a shooter. He has great touch for a 6-9 athlete and may actually be more of a big guard than small forward. He also is mobile with his dribble and can create his own shot. At Nachbars size, it is easier for him to get looks over his defender.

SHORTCOMINGS: Going to the basket and finishing is not one of Nachbars strengths. He shies from traffic and is a weak rebounder. Some feel that he is not even that strong of a scorer, and that he is just getting attention because of the European hype. Defense is a big concern.

WHAT THEYRE SAYING: There are some questions about his strength of character. When you play an 82-game schedule, you have to be able to play through small injuries, the time zone changes, the mental and physical fatigue. Is he going to be able to develop the American toughness thats required to play in the NBA? Thats the question with him. - Phoenix Suns director of European scouting Tim OShea

As I said, the guys clearly a shooter, but what else does he have?

    DavidS,

You know your sarcastic quotes aren't even close to my reactions. I'm just stating my opinion, a healthy dose of skepticism, and noting that. People are intrepreting it with way too much frevor.

    Crash,

It's very naive to assume that a person is automatically a fan of the city they move to. I've never been a knicks fan, even when they were good i hated them. When you can come to a New York sports bar during the finals of Houston vs the Knicks and cheer for the Rockets (as I did)...when you do that, then maybe you'll be worthy of debate.

    New Yorker,

So your only take is that our rookies have to prove themselves.

Ok.....does anyone here actually disagree with this?

Yep, Nachbar and Ming need to prove they are NBA players, but I think with Francis, Cuttino, KT, Mo T, Griffin etc...etc....they don't have to contribute much right away.

The Rocks are stacked.........finally.....the rebuilding is done.

NewYork, where did you get your info from? It's obvious that you haven't seen the film on him (internet feeds), nor read any of the draft notes from the Rockets staff....I'll help you out...

I'll say it again...he's not just a shooter. He's a "basketball player", but needs
to improve on his defense....but he can shoot, drive to the basket
    and run the floor...read on...

    Nachbar, Rockets thrilled
    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle

Nachbar, 21, a 6-8 small forward with a deft shooting touch and a flair for completing fast breaks and drives, helped lead Italian power Benetton Treviso to the Euroleague Final Four, averaging 13.7 points on 60 percent shooting.

    • "He's the guy we had targeted," Dawson said. "He's an outstanding shooter. He probably gets more dunks for an outside player than anybody we saw on film this year. He flies down the floor. He plays up above the rim. He can shoot from 3.

    • "When he worked out here, he was simply very, very impressive. He made 24 of 25 shots from 17 (feet) and on the 3s, he made 23 of 25. That kind of shooting really gets your attention."

    • Nachbar even caught Tomjanovich's eye in Italy when the coach went on a scouting trip, primarily to see Treviso teammate Nikoloz Tskitishvili when the Rockets held the fifth pick of the draft before the lottery.

    • "This kid is really an exciting player," Tomjanovich said. "The scrimmage I watched over there, he had 10 dunks. We had maybe nine NBA teams watching. They were not going through the motions. He can shoot the ball from the outside, put it on the floor. He's a competitor. He's a very good fit for our team.

Nachbar does not match the stereotype of a European shooter, which could make him even more valuable to the Rockets. He can bring the perimeter shooting they need, but he plays big and finishes above the rim.

    • What they say: Rockets director of player personnel Dennis Lindsey: "Really can finish. Finishes with a flair. His last three or four steps to the goal, the guy is an NBA-level highlight finisher. Good ball skills. Shoots pretty good, but a little flat. A good shooter, makes shots. Good size and rebounding capability for his position, too."

    Yeah Dave,

I read that article too way back, and I just don't buy anything the rockets put out because they want to hype a player and get people excited. Rudy has always been a "stay-positive" kind of guy to encourage players and avoid conflict. I've never once heard him speak of any players shortcoming...or even say a player isn't that great of a shooter. Every rocket who's ever played under him can shoot the lights out. Maybe it's their marketing strategy to sell tickets. I was very confused by that chronicle article after reading what I read about Nachbar.

    Anyway, here's the link:

So your going by what you read in USA TODAY that's a quote by the Suns European scout. A real unbiased source (they had the 22nd pick of the first rd., wonder why he didn't play up Nachbar?)

You seem to think highly of USA TODAY's sports coverage. That tells me all I need to know about you, NewYorker. I'm not surprised that your confused. You should consider broadening your sources of information. I think I'll see what Clutch has to say about Friday... maybe you'll figure out how to get some attention from what he says in THAT report and our reactions to it.

I'm really looking forward to it.

NEW YORKER:- You still know nothing about Nachbar! You are quoting something you have read! This is someone elses opinion, you have not been able to form your opinion yet, because you have not seen him play in an NBA Game! I am in exactly the same position! The Media are so biased for/against certain Players, Coaches, Teams and Sports that they cant be taken at face value, because they do not have enough first hand information to form an accurate unbiased opinion. You on the other hand have formed anti Rocket opinions some based on experience, some based upon unreliable sources, such as media. I dont believe you are realy a Rockets fan, especially when you shoot down the Icons of our Club,in such a disrespectable way. You could be a sadistic person who stirs emotions of a hated enemy. You are not my enemy, for you are my brother and I forgive you!

NY Troll. You are just trying to create controversy to get people to think your opinion is worth commenting on. FYI, you would have a broader audience for your antics if you picked on Yao Ming or stuck to a Sprewell - A. Houston site. Your comments are groundless and BS - period. Don't go away mad - just go away...

Hmm. You're saying that you can't say he's a steal until he proves it during games, but you're willing to call him a dud until he proves otherwise? That's a bit hypocritical, isn't it?

I don't know where you got all of that but here is the skinny from some others:

    http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/bostjannachbar.htm

    NBA Comparison: Peja Stojakovic

Strengths: Another sweet shooting European SF. Combines great athleticism with good intelligence. Very smooth player with offensive skill and court sense. Great understanding of the game and plays under control and with great competitiveness. Runs the floor very well and can get off the floor well and finish. Can actually create off the dribble and his ball handling ability is good and looks like it can become very good. Is still prone to having his pocket picked, but his handles are adept for a SF. Will be able to help a team right away as he is probably more NBA ready than any player in the draft after becoming one of the key players on a Final Four Euroleague team, Benneton Treviso. Has range on his shot. He is the real deal. Not the shooter of Peja, but a more fluid athlete.

    http://www.clutchcity.net/draft_profile.cfm?Player=68

Strengths of Bostjan Nachbar Good all-around skills Has a nice stroke on his jumper, but possibly not the range of a Stojakovic or Turkoglu. Excels at driving to the hoop and taking it strong to the rack, and can find the open man as well in those situations. Versatile enough to play possibly three positions. Has a chance to be a very special offensive player.

    http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=1032

We know Nachbar can shoot, but Rudy T raves about his ability to attack the basket.

"In that scrimmage [in Italy], he did a lot of things but the thing that impressed me was he had about 10 dunks in the scrimmage," Tomjanovich said. "That was mind-boggling. We had Hakeem, Barkley and Drexler and you didn't see that many close to the basket shots. Some of the plays, you'd think, 'Nah, he can't get to the basket.' Then, somehow, he made it happen."

All of that information sounds a somewhat different than the info you have.. Sounds kind of like Hoopsworld crap to me. I have provided links from a non biased web site, clutch city and words rrom Rudy T's mouth as well as video links. All indicate that Boki is a strong finisher and does not shy away from traffic. Your skinny also expresses concern over the fact that Boki has never played an 82 game schedule. Do you care to inform all of us which rookie has played in an 82 game schedule? Do you now see what else Boki has? Come back when you have your through firing blanks.

Of course he stands a better chance of because not only does Boki have a stronger basketball background, but he fills an immediate need at the SF spot(and I'm hoping backup SG), so he is going to get PT whereas Langhi's role wasn't quite as defined coming into camp. Once again, it seems you don't think I understand that the expectations on Boki are much higher than they were on Langhi for many reasons including their draft position and that isn't the case. Still, you have to admit there is a certain cloud of mysteryand hype that surrounds any foreign hoops product, more than ever in recent years.

No crash, actually I didn't mean to use the Langhi/Bullard comparison and never should have left that part in the quote. I didn't think anyone would manipulate it into a Boki/Bullard comparison. I just posted the whole article as Clutch wrote it because it showed how much Langhi was being hyped once training camp began.

For the record, I don't think Boki will be a dud or a bench warmer. He's got too much to offer. All I'm saying is I hope he lives up to it. Like I said earlier, I'm hoping he'll become our answer at the SF/backup SG.

Langhi was never a "had to make it" type pick. Boki is a #15 first rounder with professional experience. I think the expectations for him are much higher, Boki is expected to be good and contribute right away. I think that he was drafted to replace Langhi (or at least make Langhi expendable, kind of like when Tierre made Damon Jones expendable and they cut him loose).

What disappoints me is Collier at #15, although he has been "injured". Maybe he is improved, but I think this will be the year to just let him go. Cut the losses (like they did with Langhi, Maloney, Drew etc.) and keep someone like Mickeal.

With the motion offense and the talent we have he certainly will be a guy other teams would double off of, and he should get some open looks...
