I actually like living here. It still has a good mix of yuppies and old school latino families. I laugh that the yupps who don't mow their own lawns, but whatever. I've made friends with some of the aforementioned...people who have lived here for a long time and moved. The ones that I know did it willingly and loved it. Profits of $200K+ and moving to a suburban Houston mansion? Others who live in shacks around here are doing just fine. Gentrification is not a bad thing for poor places.

I'm not sure what you are saying here. Are you saying there are no other healthy food options in this neighborhood? Are you saying minorities don't want to try anything new like Trader Joe's food? Just wanted to clarify before I respond further.

Yes, that is what I am saying. The PAALF is promoting segregation. Minorities promote the widening gap between the rich and poor due to fear of change, fear of a new thing. If they understood the outdated practice of redlining and incidences of bank loans to areas with higher/lower default rates, they would shut up. Instead they are trying to create issues on a matter where there is none. These are the same kind of people who cheer Michelle Obama's all black birthday party like it represents something or is a moral victory for blacks instead of acknolwedging the progress gentrification and racial assimilation have made in the last decade. I guarantee a poor white neighborhood would not whine about a Trader Joe''s.

A troll resorts to name calling because he cannot engage in intellectual discourse. Speaks volumes about a person's character when he enters a thread to hurl baseless insults and slander someone personally instead of adding anything of value to the discussion. I know a lot of you are teenagers and think it's the cool thing to do but try to find the inner man in you. You have the potential to be more than this.

It's amazing that opening a grocery store is now about race.

If I could sum up this thread in one sentence, it would be:
The fact that the term "non-oppressed peoples" was used in any context is counterproductive to any rational economic decision making.

I'm not sure how this insanity has been excused by resorting to the usual "but conservatives are evil" smokescreen. I don't really care about grand-scale liberal or conservative views on this issue. As a human, I'm disappointed in my fellow humans here.

They should have opened it as "Trader Jorge's" -- this name would bring big money from all lifestyles.

I don't think a lot of the people living in shacks are doing nearly as well as you may think. The value of the land has greatly increased. Therefore the property taxes have jumped accordingly. Unless you know whether or not they have kept up with the property tax payments, you do not know how they are doing. The county will not usually institute a tax sale until a property is somewhere between three and five years delinquent in assessments.

It speaks volumes that you consider the baseless trash you post to be intellectual discourse.

With the homestead exemption, old people exemption, disability exemption, and vet exemption taken into consideration, a $40K land value increase over the last 5 years can raise someone's annual property taxes anywhere in between $800 and $0 over that time. In the meantime, the market value of your joint has gone up to $270K+ on a $20K value home that you bought a long time ago. That's a good tradeoff that people here can afford, and if not, then the sell is a great reward. I contemplate everyday selling/renting my joint and moving into a shoebox.

You can fleece a sheep every April 15, but you can only skin it once.

Do you really think that skinning the sheep will take more burden and hardship for the poor?

Unfortunately, tax cuts do not "grow the pie," despite the claims made constantly by conservatives.
