Excluding Kenny Smith and Cassel of the championship teams, the rockets guards that could shoot were pre-Steve Francis. Those guards were Matt Maloney, Bryce Drew, and Brent Price.

You think Rafer is frustrating you when he can't hit that 3? Imagine that collective expletives of Rockets fans when all 3 white point guards couldn't guard oppsing PGs, couldn't dribble for their lives, much less dribble/penetrate or hit a layup in traffic, or worse, can't even make a good entry pass to Hakeem Olajuwon.

I will take rafer running the point over the other three, and I'd have 30 year old francis off the bench. I don't miss the days of matt maloney.

I remember watching strawberry play in summer league; I thought he played great when he played against the Rockets in Vegas, defended extremely well.

Great trade from the standpoint that if the Rockets have to pay for that spot, he better be good enough to make the team.

With Singletary it was a partially guaranteed deal. Now with Strawberry, he better prove his worth to get paid.

As it was, most of us here tought that Singletary was sure to be cut anyhow. Now at least from a business point of view, it makes a ton of sense.

Morey is very savy!!! I'm sure that Les is extremely pleased to have him making such moves. That $200,000 is going to be pure profit for Les Alexander. It's the equivalent of selling 60 season tickets at a cost of $80 a game. But is Stawberry does make the team, then that means you've got yourself a bargain of extreme proportions.

That is a reverse racism remark. Why make note to their race. Aren't they players first? I don't hear you talking about Randy Livingston, Roderick Rhodes, Emanuel Davis?

At least Maloney played himself into an career. Brent Price just had horrible luck with injury. And Bryce Drew was the product of maybe the 2nd most replay in NCAA basketball behind Christian Laetner.

Now, you want to talk about white point guards, why don't you start making fun of Steve Nash?

There is no foul in playing fundamental basketball. And from witnessing Spain push the U.S. 1st teamers to the limit, Race plays not such a huge role as some might think.

    Wow.

From a talent and/or production standpoint this trade makes zero sense.

Therefore, either Morey has seen something he likes in DJ. Or the more likely option that it's a purely cost-cutting exercise.

From the bits and pieces I have seen of Strawberry he looks like he can go a bit. But I reckon if he makes the roster it's a real bonus.

If Morey turns the Artest trade into another roster player - then I will present him with Gold, Frankincense and Myrhh - because truly he must be a modern day saviour. :p

Strawberry has a definite shot to make the roster. His size and defensive ability are very intriguing assets. He has more upside than an undersized shooter who struggles in the postseason like Luther, at minimum.

I know people are in full hate mode for Luther, but he has proven he can shoot in the NBA. Strawberry has done nothing. This move is just to save some money and make a "potential" player have to earn a roster spot.

Good pick up, it is not like we lost anything major.

Plus, Strwberry averaged 18 PPG in summer league, while Singletary only had 6 PPG.

Also Strawberry is a better defender.

I've been owned. No excuses. I had the schedule confused and didn't recall that TNT covered pre-season games.

    1. Morey saving Les money
    or
    2. Morey trying to find diamond in the rough
    or
    3. Morey packaging deal
    or
    4. Morey finding a full sized point guard who can defend. (We need a dribble/pass pg. Don't have to shoot any better than Shaq. Just feed to Yao/TMac/Artest/Scola.)

Heh, my message sounded better in my head than the message that went on the internet.

To defend myself, i have in previous threads made reference to those promising 3. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=3806608&postcount=15

My memory of them was that they had great potential, but email had surgery, rhodes had raw skill but couldn't use it (like Kirk Snyder), and i forgot about livingston. Their minutes were limited, so its not like we could point to them as the reason why we didn't excel.

My memory of the other three (who are by coincidence white) was of great frustration. Matt Maloney especially, i guess since he was a starter.

The white comment made sense in my head, if i were discussing with my friends and just noting it as a coincidence, but not of significance. The internets is not so forgiving. and now I look bad for being defensive and backpedalling.

Strawberry gave Brook absolute fits on the defensive end in summer league.

Isn't it pretty much agreed on the Strawberry will be cut? It's a cost-cutting move, pure and simple.

I don't think it's as much as a cost cutting move as it is a smart - "A prove yourself move - nothing given everything earned roster spot".

It's simple, to get paid that roster spot which Stawberry hold must now be earned before any money is paid - unlike Singletary who had some sort of guarantee regadless if he made the team or not.

This move is a bargain move. You either have a player who is affordable by NBA standards who has just earned his roster spot. Or on the other hand you don't have to pay him - and he'll find himself in the minor leagues somewhere at least.

But, I can acknowledge how it can be perceived as a cost cutting move. However, if Strawberry were to prove himself in pre season, then I could see him making the team.

In my opinion another minor move but tremendously savy!
