According to figures I've seen, Amaechi makes 2.61 mill this year; Rice makes 9.6 mill. We now have a 6.99 million dollar trade exception. Or, in other words, our committed salaries are 6.99 mill less than before, making it very easy to sign a guy like Stephen Jackson with the remainder of the MLE without stretching the dollars. I also would say that the acquisition of Amaechi makes it easy to trade Cato without worrying about who will back-up Yao. Cato and a 7 million dollar trading piece could be able to fetch something. This 7 mill exception basically makes any BYC problems fairly easily solvable (just to bring Artest back in the mindset). I would guess the Rockets have another move up their sleeve that would give them reason to move Rice and get this breathing room/trade exception now rather than let Rice expire. After all, we did give up a first rounder too.
I really doubt there is anything more to this than cutting our payroll. If there was, it would have been a three way trade so we would be able to use the difference in Rices and Amaechi's contracts in getting another player. Since it wasn't a three way, we only have whatever we have left of the MLE.
This guy is 33 years old with no talent at all. Of all the trades I have ever seen, this has to be one of the worst if there is not something else in the works. I'm in a state of shock. I don't mind losing Rice, but in the name of GOD why did we trade a first round pick for Amechi??!! This defies all logic on so many different levels I don't even know where to begin. Nobody will ever convince me that THIS was the best we could do for a player with an expiring contract like Glenn Rice. Amazing.
Can you do a three way deal, if the third party is a Free Agent? I.E. if we were going for Jim Jackson, would he have been involved in the original deal, or would it have to be two seperate aquisitions?
It went from radio rumor to confirmed trade in about 30 minutes flat. Plus, no mods are on right now except keeley. I just checked. NIKEstrad: Thanks. I feel better now. Hope your numbers are right.
That what I think they are thinking that they will make the playoffs and the draft looks thin for next year so trade for some #2 picks that do not have to be guaranteed from a team that should have a high #2 pick for the next few years. Can a team trade the #2 pick away for 2 consecutive years?
Well instead of freeing up 9 million on next year's cap we added 4.5 million! I can't believe it. Well - we now have someone on the team that plays worse than EG... and makes more money... and we lost a 1st round pick to boot. Worst. Trade. Ever.
I don't understand why they continue to waste first round picks. I just don't get this. Sure the salary dump was great and I don't think we need rice but we just gave away a pick. Terrible.
My understanding is that Stevie's new contract kicks in next season, so we wouldn't see much cap room then. Personally, I'd rather have a $7m trade exception now.
This is true but IMO this team needs veterans who can play consistantly(Rice only gives about 50 games a year w/o some type of freak injury) and NOT rookies. Just my 2 cents. Give it some time, I have a feeling something else is in the works.
I hope NIKEstrad is right! Otherwise why give up a 1st round pick to increase salary cap hit for next year?
Try 3 million. I got my numbers from hoopshype, who are pretty reliable for salary info. We wouldn't have been under the cap anway. Further, Amaechi has a player opt out for next year; I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Europe anyway, clearing your beloved cap space. We just signed Jim Jackson (who alone is more valuable than Rice) and we still have a 7 million dollar trade exception to play with. If we come out with a quality player because of the exception, I'll be more than content. I see this move as a very clear sign we're looking to win now. The trade Rice made space for us to sign Jim Jackson. Instead of waiting for Rice's contract to expire, we've used it to turn into a huge trade exception, a solid swingman via free agency, and also make Cato an expendable commodity (which is more than we ever could have gotten for Rice).
I Love it when a plan comes together! Is there a prize if your Rumor turns into an actual Trade? Man was I off on the player involved !
Ok, Dude, I ragged you in an earlier post within this thread. Looks like this was a credible source. You just gained a slight uptick in my credibility-oh-oh-meter.
