Billups, Prince AND Darko? I would think that you are overvaluing Steve, but who knows. Detroit loves Okur so maybe if they somehow saved salary in the deal, but that's stretching it. The Pistons have plans for Darko and I would be very surprised if they traded him. They would have to realize that perhaps they made a mistake and he is several years away from doing anything, but I don't know if that's the case at all. Detroit News: Long-awaited Darko era might begin during final 28 games http://www.detnews.com/2004/pistons/0402/16/f01-65431.htm Detroit News: Behind-the-scenes progress by Milicic impresses Pistons http://www.detnews.com/2003/pistons/0312/01/d04-338606.htm BTW, the original article in this thread only mentioned Billups and Francis in a vague "rumor". I'm not sure where Prince came from. Francis isn't going to be dealt pre-deadline anyway .... just fun to speculate.
BYC in a nutshell... Francis counts as $5m going out to HOU but as $10m incoming to DET. Since Billups and Prince make slightly under $6m, DET has to add $4m in contracts to make the deal work capwise. Since the Rockets have a $6.99m trade exception, they can accept $5m of additional contracts above Steve's outgoing $5m. Adding Piatkowski's $2.4m means DET must send $6.6m to HOU.
Larry Brown's Houston interest was believed to be one part Yao and one part Stevie. That said, unless the deal is Billups/Wallace for Stevie (and TE to 'fix' BYC) it isn't going to happen. And that is not going to happen. As I reminded earlier and Jeff later a deal ramifying against Pistons being able to resign Okur ain't gonna fly.
Sorry! It cant be true till next seaspon at the earliest. Although it sounds like a good Trade, it doesnt give us our Playmaker.
What's so great about Darko's game? There is a big chance that he joins Bradley and becomes one of the most overhyped 2rd overall pick in the last 20 years.
Who'se this Prince guy? I was talking about Sebastian Pronce... Ok, bad jokes aside, I am hearing that there is something of a division in Pistonland about Now vs. Later. Not a conflict, not two sides, but that Brown is strongly pushing for a run this year, figuring it's wide open, and that Detroit needs another legit star or two...Apparently he's only happy with 6 or 7 deep, and wants to add top end, not bottom. And Brwon is alos reportedly disenchanted with Billups penchant for taking treys all the time, and would prefer a penetration oriented point. Joe D is listening. This is the basis for the talk about loading up and getting Wallace, even though you'd only have him for the rest of this year. If that's the route they're going, I am thinking that Francis has enough value, and fits their needs enough to warrant Darko and Billups. If we add another piece, say Cato, even Mobley, and get back Prince or something else of value plus filler, I'd say it's a case of two teams fulfilling their needs; us long term, them short term, each with upsides on the other end ( SF will be around for a while, Billups helps us right now.)
If we add Cato or MoT, we get them talking. The whole point about resigning Okur is because they have no big men to speak off. Cato and Taylor are no Shaq's, but neither is Okur by any stretch of the imaginiation. Francis, Cato/Taylor, fill-in for Billups, Darko, Prince Who wouldn't do that on our end?
Billups (17.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 5.2 apg in 36.0 minutes) SF Corliss Williamson 8.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 0.7 apg in 19.4 minutes) PG Chucky Atkins (6.3 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 2.4 apg in 18.7 minutes) PF Darko Milicic (1.0 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 0.2 apg in 3.4 minutes) SF TayShaun Prince (10.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.4 apg in 34.5 minutes) Detroit receives: PG Steve Francis (16.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.9 apg in 40.0 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (6.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 0.9 apg in 26.8 minutes) Change in team outlook: -21.0 ppg, -0.9 rpg, and -4.1 apg. Houston trades: PG Steve Francis (16.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.9 apg in 40.0 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (6.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 0.9 apg in 26.8 minutes) Houston receives: PG Chauncey Billups (17.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 5.2 apg in 54 games) SF Corliss Williamson (8.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 0.7 apg in 51 games) PG Chucky Atkins (6.3 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 2.4 apg in 38 games) PF Darko Milicic (1.0 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 0.2 apg in 16 games) SF TayShaun Prince Billups, Williamson, Atkins, Prince and Milicic for Francis, and Cato works, and frees them up cap room for Wallace. Williamson is on tap for another 2 after this, but he's a decent 6th man, and fits JVG's style. I hear that it was the Pistons trying to get him into the NY deal that quashed it for now. This could work, and they could flip Cato, Sura etc. for Wallace.
Again, I dont think Francis is going anywhere "this season". My point is that Billups is one the premier shooters in the league (ala Peja, Allen, Cassel, Nash and A. Houston). Billups shots selection are as bad as they seem. The pistons just dont have a legit Low-Block presence. Billups would be a good compliment to Yao. Any great shooter would be a compliment to a team with whos strength are on the Low-Block.
Agreed. That is the type of athleticism we were hoping we would have gotten with Eddie Griffin, Terence Morris and Bostjan Nachbar. That is a lot of wasted potential right there. Those picks not panning out really set this francise back. Plus you can add in Kenny Thomas/James Posey. The players that were really athletic either didn't pan out or we didn't keep them. It hurts!
I like what Macbeth is saying here, and perhaps if both teams are filling each other's needs, that might work ... but Francis for Billips and Prince is not something that meets the Rockets needs. I really don't see Francis getting traded right now. Maybe in the off season, but not now. We'd have to use the exception, and that makes things just too expensive, unless someone gave us an incredible deal, like the one Macbeth is suggesting. Darko would fill the future hole at PF, and give us a longer term potential for championship success, which we lost when Griffin self-destructed.
I, for one, would love to get Darko to the team, if at all possible. We haven't seen anything from him because Brown won't play rooks. Of course JVG isn't much different. Still, Darko backing up Mo and Yao....maybe? There was an article about how the Rocks want to dump some salary if possible (I think it mentioned Boston as a trading partner). For how we're using Steve, we might as well have Chauncey. At least he doesn't make the max.
I wouldn't do that trade. Steve has more value than that. He's a proving All-Star and if you're going to trade him, trade back with a SUPERSTAR not a bunch of scrubs.
I think Chauncey is a good shooter, but to put him as one of the elite? He's had one season of shooting above 40% from the 3 pt line....this year. Let's not get too hasty here... Prince is going to be a good team player. I especially liked watching him during the rookie/sophomore game. He had that between the legs dunk after LeBron did his. And he showed some nice range in hitting a couple 3s. It's an interesting proposition, but I think we could probably hold out for a little more, like many have said.
Sorry, rocksolid, but I posted it months ago. But you probably heard it here (within the confines of this thread) second.
