With all due respect, you've said that 6 times. It's not really the basis for a conversation after the first 2 or 3. Welcome to the BBS, and how about giving us an opinion pertaining to the Rockets, and the trade being discussed in this thread?
So is this official? I know they can't acknolwedge that this trade exist until July 12th, but can this work? Does the salary match? I still hope this doesn't go through. Gay for Battier seems like a steal, unless we get someone else I don't like this trade at all. I hope something happens and the trade fail. I believe Gay will be a great player in two or three years. I just believe that Rockets organization will end up regretting this move...
they will. They jsut believe what matters is win now. They would rather have a contender team for 1 or 2 yrs now and screw up for the next 5 years, as compared to a borderline playoff team
I can see Rockets a playoff team as long as Yao and McGrady are still playing, that is, for another 4 to 5 years. 1 or 2 years and screw up for the next 5 years is rather pessimistic on your path.
From Donny Most's signature: Percentage of players drafted in the first round from '90-'02 that made at least one All-Star appearance: 12% Average number of All-Stars drafted per first round: 3.63 Translation? A solid, full-time starter is worth more than a first round draft pick. Potential doesn't win championships. (but yeah.. we probably should have gotten the 24th pick) Exactly how I feel.....and think the 8th pick was not all that valuable to begin with . DD
are the only choices being all star or bust? we don't need gay to be an all star.. we already have two in our team.. we just need him to be an athletic third option.. how long did tayshaun price and josh howard take before they started contributing?
Of course not, but both of those players were ok in their first year, but not great. Heck it took Howard until year 3 to really be good, and even now he makes a lot of stupid mistakes late in games. Battier was a safer choice for a team trying to win THIS YEAR, and for the next 4 years. We have 3 very GOOD starters and 2 average ones now. And with Novak and James added to the rotation, we are surely a 55+ win team and competing for a championship, THIS YEAR. And, I think all Rocket fans would like that....... DD
I understand your sentiment and partially agree with it, but you're not making a very good case. First, you stated that previous examples of first round picks were "ok in their first year, but not great." Does this imply that you think Battier will be great? I hope not -- he has never been great, just solid. He may help the Rockets in the short term, but will likely hurt them in the long term. And as I stated earlier, this could also hurt in the short term if it means increased minutes at the 2 for TMac and more stress on his back. There is no more guarantee of success with Battier than with Gay and Swift. Second, you discounted the likely contributions of Gay, a first round pick, and then said "with Novak and James added..." Do you have any idea of the odds against a second round pick contributing anything? Third, you said "with Novak and James added" (my emphasis). James is not part of the deal, and the deal is not necessary for us to pursue him. We could have Gay, Swift, Novak, and James. Personally, I think James is a decent tweener guard, like Head with a better three point shot but weaker defense. His presence, if he signs here, in no way makes this trade better. Also, both Dallas and Minnesota are pursuing him and can likely outbid the Rockets. He would like to come back here, but it's a long shot for Houston. Finally, you project a 55+ win season, which is likely for a team with Yao and TMac healthy all year whether this trade goes through or not! Having a 55 win season rests mainly on those two being healthy, and my belief is that having Gay and Swift makes this more likely than having just Battier. The Rockets' biggest needs going into the draft were: a 2 with size who can defend on the perimeter, a backup for TMac who can generate offense, a reserve 5 (Mutombo can't last forever), a shooter who can stretch the defense, and better overall speed, athleticism, and depth. Battier can shoot, but doesn't fill any other need. Gay can generate offense from the bench and potentially even start at the 2. Swift, even with his limitations, can play some minutes at the 5. In my view, this trade made the Rockets weaker because we are less deep, less athletic, and have less speed now.
josh howard was already good in his first year 8.6 pts/5.5 rebs.. then he got better in his sophomore year 12.6/6.4 rebs (remember his contributions when mavs beat rox in first round of the 05 playoffs).. and last year his third year he was already considered if not no. 2 then no. 3 in mavs.. competing for a championship this year? I think we need to get past the first round first before we talk about championship.. I think rockets are more realistic than that..
How many young up-and-comers were on the spurs championship team?? How 'bout the heat?? any of them make serious contributions??
OK, you're in. Party at my apartment tomorrow. Since you're from Beijing I wouldn't mind if you brought a duck if it's not too much trouble.... OK, you're in. Party at my apartment tomorrow.
