I don't think we have to hate the trade so much. The Rockets is making a gamble, winning in the next 2-3 seasons or develope the next star. CD is giving up a a possible future star, or even superstar and choose to win now. There mush be a reason why Guy fell this far. I believe more deals will happen before the season starts. Current starting line up: 1, Alston 2, Tmac, 3, Battier 4, JH, 5, Yao. not bad IMHO to start with.
I saw this trade, and I was initially stunned. While I was unable to get to the BBS, I sat back and thought about the trade. Here are the pros and cons as I see it. Pros: - Shane Battier is a known defender and solid at both ends of the court. (Jerry Coangelo, a known team-builder, selected Battier to try out for the 2008 Olympic Team.) - Battier allows T-mac to move back to the 2, where we can create more mismatches. - Stro Swift is back in Memphis. He didn't work out with Memphis, he didn't work out here in Houston, but Jerry West took him back? That doesn't seem all that smart to me. Looking back, Stro only came to play every fifth game or so, and has no motor or driving passion to play basketball at the highest levels. That's something we don't need. Cons: - We gave up a player with tremedous potential 2-3 years down the road for a solid rotation player. This could be a penny-wise, pound foolish situation. - We didn't get a draft pick back for Rudy Gay. To me, this is one of the biggest flaws in the deal; Shane Battier isn't worth a #8 draft choice period at this moment. - As stated earlier in the thread, we lose depth at PF. This is a critical need that has just been exacerbated. Is the deal the worst trade ever? I don't feel that way. Could we have gotten better value? Certainly. But let's not cast aspersions and stones at Mr. Battier yet. He's a proven commodity, who I can forsee getting 12pts/6rbs and great defense from. If Gay is the second coming of <all-world superstar X>, then we screwed up royally. But given Gay's issues w/ drive and motivation, he's far from a guaranteed contributor. These issues are the same issues that plauged Stromile Swift in his brief tenure in Houston to the dismay of Rocket fans. Let's sit back and see how this all plays out before we hang our GM duo in effigy.
We should have traded JHo, he is declining and slow. How can we keep up with PHX and Dallas? Fire JVG!!!!! Let us keep Gay!!!
Nobody is willing to give us value for Howard, so, in a wise move, we'll keep him. Actually, Howard is easily one of the best 5 players on the team. Better than Stromile, right now. And who's to say that Stromile will ever develop?
12 - 18??? The guy cracked 20 points once in 2006 (Calendar Year) playing 35 minutes a game. He's never been a scorer and he's not all of a sudden going to be. In fact when players come to the Rockets they seem to score less as Yao and T-Mac are the main offensive guns. He's not a legit 3rd scoring option. He's a 10/5 guy that gets his points when he can but he's not a scorer. I'd say he's less a scorer than Wesley and Head.
I'm okay with the trade. I don't want Gay on our team if Van Gundy is going to let him rot on the bench. And obviously that was going to be the case. But we've got to get at least a PF back in the deal. With Stro here, we could at least pretend that we had something at the 4. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE JUWAN RUNNING AROUND FOR 30 MPG NEXT YEAR!
i had time to cool down, i logged back on...and took me about 2 seconds to get pissed off again. i can't believe we went from the lottery pick who some said was the best talent in the draft to Shane Battier. I agree with alot of people that he is a good player, but thats if we traded Swift for him straight up. He's not worth the #8 pick and Swift. only way i'll get over it, is if we land somebody else in the deal...somebody young.
Could we please stop dealing with Jerry West, the man is always making us look like fools. It seems like the Grizzlies just keep coming up from under us and making us look like idiots. James Posey goes the grizz and we got nothing. We sign Stro from the grizzlies and he gives us nothing. Damon Stoudamire was gonna sign with us but the grizz gave him a bigger contract. I mean if Jerry West thinks Rudy Gay is a stud then why cant CD see that. Maybe they are just slowly getting revenge from us with that Steve Francis trade back in '99.
Yes, 12 to 18. Look at Memphis' roster. As soon as that roster is printed on paper, the ink starts fighting over the ball. Battier is an unselfish guy (and a class act) who merely faded into the background on that team. On a team like the Rockets', players like Yao and Tracy will make sure Battier sees some of the spotlight. If you want to start playing a stats game, Battier shot nearly 50% from the field last year, averaging 10 points per game on 7 attempts a game. Pretty damn good, in my opinion. If he takes, say, 10 shots per game, and shoots about the same percentage, that falls into my 12 to 18 range.
To be fair, he was the 6th option on the Grizzlies and he averaged 10 ppg. To think he could get 2-8 more when we have a lot fewer guys taking shots is not unrealistic. Even Juwan averaged about 12 per game.
I can only hope that the doctor who does Battier's physical is a rabid Rockets fan and FAILS HIM. Can you trade an injured player? Maybe Battier will have an "accident" j/k
I still don't believe it. We all hope the Rockets will never be in the lottery in the next future. So you DON'T TRADE a pick so high when you have an unique chance to get one. Was it so hard to get an ok big guard for the MLE (Anthony Parker is wanting to come back to the NBA this season) in the free agent class while Gay is developping for the next 2 years? The fact that Stro is included means that JVG is behind this. Very pissed, I only hope they get AT LEAST Memphis 2007 first rounder or this trade just means a complete nonsense for me.
What a stupid trade!!!!!I can't believe. The Rox give up a potential superstar AND stro for Battier! Battier is a solid player with high bball iq 'n ****,he is a nice addition to this team, but giving up 2 players for HIM?????There has to be another player involved in this deal if it is going to happen.Memphis would have warrick, swift, gasol, johnson, roberts at PF.They have to give us at least Alexander Johnson.
From a mathematical standpoint, if you divide the amount of points per game he had last year by the shots he took per game, (kind of like on base percentage in baseball) you get roughly 1.43. Now, take that number and multiply it by ten shots per game (14.28 ppg). Ten shots is easily realistic. Now, multiply it by 12 shots (17.16). Now, by 15(21.45). Given, the more shots Battier takes per game, the lower his field goal percentage will go, but it won't affect these numbers by much. Battier had a GREAT season last year, and is very underrated. His whole career has been overshadowed by a team that just simply cannot find enough balls to shoot.
Just had to get in on what will surely be the most anger filled thread of all time. Disgusting. Simply disgusting.
Just one more thought, how many teams have succeded with that kind of win now approach (trading valuable first round picks for mediocre veterans), not Dallas, Dirk came through draft n°9 pick, not Phoenix, Amare n°9 pick, not San Antonio, all valuable players trough draft even lower picks, the Lakers, never, the list goes on... I can't think of any successful team who succed through that route, hope we will be the first one, but for how many years? and what if T-Mac goes down again with an injury? where's that second star on the team, Battier? Rudy Gay should have been it and for LOOONG years. The Rockets don't learn from their mistakes, once Rashard Lewis, now Rudy Gay, we will regret this move while Jerry West is just loughing. Frankly, it's time for CD to go. Sad day
