I understand what you are saying. But if Gay pans out thats a potential dynasty. Battier simply makes us assuradely stronger. Potential reward outweighs risk in my opinion...
Did you guys watch this kid play??? He is a very good shooter and his IQ is fine. He has a smooth jumper. I can understand questioning the desire, but there was a bigger deal made of Villanueva's effort last year and he was probably the 2nd best rookie last year.
The Rockets management just made the team slower, and older with this trade. I thought they want to be athletic? I thought they want to have depth? Why wouldn't JVG play a rookie? I think JVG really messed up this team. If he is really a good coach he should be able to motivate his players and be able to teach and develop his young players. JVG can't do both, thats why he likes those old players because he doesn't have to teach them no more. If Yao was drafted when JVG was here, he will not have a chance to develop because Jeff Van Dummy will not give him a chance, just like what happened to Stro. Trading Gay is a big mistake, the dude is only 20 and have a lot of upsides, Rockets should look into the future and develop their young talents now so that when T-Mac and Yao are done we have players that would take over. Thats how you make a Dynasty.
I'm not sure what to make of this, i've tried to process it all day and i just can't believe RM (Rockets management) felt that this was the best they could do. They had an entire offseason to try out different scenario's, take calls from teams that really want Rudy Gay and see what they could offer us. It's almost as if the RM felt there was only a 5 minute window of oppurtunity to make thier move. We could have gotten alot more for this pick, plain and simple. We don't know what Rudy Gay is going to acheive in his career and if RM are not convinced fine, let another team take that risk and give us a better player in return. Didn't Toronto want Gay? why couldn't RM try for Mo Pete and Mike James while we sent Stro along with Gay? something, anything better than what we got. Battier will help, and i am assuming T-Mac will move back to SG (not crazy about it) while Battier takes up residence as the small forward. But the idea was to get a third option so i really hope RM is trying something, even though my faith in them is completely shot. Whatever, we still have a decent make up of a team now although we desperately need a PF. We are still not athletic enough, not quick enough to compete in the West.
I don't know if this number 8 would amount to something - but it seems to me that we could have gotten more for an 8 + swift. All we need is another pf who can't rebound. The back court is still in shambles, and T-mac's health is always a question. I just don't see what CD and JVG are thinking unless there's a lot more going on the we don't know about yet.
Rudy Gay could have been our third scorer that we needed. Another player to fear other than T Mac and Yao. He could of taken the pressure off them and Yao and T Mac could of allowed Gay to progress because they would take the pressure off him.
Really? You are actually excited about getting a chance to spend money on Radmanonic, Thomas, James, Good , Harpring, Or Murray? The only one I would take is James(maybe) and Tim Thomas - but only Thomas if you could somehow make his contract either entirely incentive based or up for renewal each year. He ONLY plays when it's contract time - just ask Milwaukee and very irritated Chicago team.... I think the best chance the Rockets have of turning this into a positive is if they sit on it until 2007 and just use their trade exemption this year. Let all the other teams blow their cap space on the big names next year and the Rockets pick up a solid vet. It's years like this where there aren't any huge names in free agency that teams tend to overpay players just because they have the cash to and are competing with other teams desperate to make a move.
i agree. if we really want to trade gay, we should wait until the offseason begins. maybe a team will miss out on signing a coveted free agent and as a last resort try to aquire rudy gay. if the rockets shop around maybe, we could get something better....i'd be happy if we got lehandro barbosa for gay. i know the suns want to free up some money to resign diaw, although i think they did that tonight by trading brian grant.....i dont know. i think the rockets should spend more time shopping around
What? Please stop trying to comfort yourself. You think getting rid of Swift is worth giving away Rudy Gay for free? If it was Swift for Battier I'd be real happy, but Swift AND Gay? Please stop trying to put a postivie spin on this because there is NONE. Don't get me wrong, Battier is a solid player, and will definitely help the Rox. But to give up BOTH Swift and Gay for him is just ridicuous.... Like Giving up Yao and TMac for Paul Pierce....
...for the record I think Mcgrady moving back the two is a good thing. It will afford him less wear and a better chance to shoot over smaller SGs. Battier with his shooting range playing the SF position helps the Rockets stretch the defense a little better since it causes teams to respect McGrady and makes it harder for them to double him with quicker players. In other words, only the PG & PF can "help" on doubles because you don't want to leave Yao or Battier. Battier will stick the open jumper.
To me, it seems Van Gundy has always had a team that had the majority of already-developed, veteran players. Van Gundy has found his niche by molding together a team of veterans, and getting them to buy into his schemes. That, in and of itself, is what makes him, in my mind, a coach that will never be considered great. I've never known him to develop guys, which I think shows that this team wants to keep him around (although I'm starting to lessen my opinion of him, and it seems everyone else is too). This team has had it's ups and downs, but we've seen CD change the team drastically to fit Van Gundy's mold. That, in my opinion, is something that should not have to be done for a great coach. Take this for what it's worth, but a great coach should not be influencing the GM on what trades to make, but a GM should be influencing a great coach on what sets to run.
Couldn't Gay do that for us. And he could slash into the basket and finish. Battier is just an average player. He going to make us a little better but not as much as Rudy Gay could have helped us.
That may be true, but the Swift-for-Battier trade works salary wise already, so Logo owes us nothing more. He may turn around and swap Swift to a third team, but if so we will get none of the benefit from it.
What could've been... sorry wrong pic earlier...lol mods please feel free to delete the world cup photo
Battier will be a good third option on this team - that's something that is a bright spot about this trade. In my opinion, he will come in and average anywhere from 12 to 18 points a game next year. You have to remember, he was on a Memphis team that is just a cluster**** of talent. Everything is so jumbled there, that an unselfish player like Battier almost forgets to take shots. Send him here, and he'll have the ball passed to him and he will be told to shoot the ball, something that more than likely rarely happened in Memphis. Now, like many people have said, the potential reward factor for Gay should outweigh the risk factor, but I'm starting to come around (slowly) a little on this trade. It was a very conservative move on the Rockets' part. If we can find a power foward (and I mean someone that's better than Juwan), then this trade will get my 100% approval. And you never know....there's a lot going on behind the scenes, and there's gotta be a reason why we're getting rid of our "future" power forward. It could be as simple as the Rockets being extremely high on Novak (and maybe they were going to trade for him if he didn't fall into our lap), or there could be another trade in the works. I don't know. The only thing that's making this trade tough to handle is that feeling that this may turn into another Eddie Griffin-type deal.
