I like Shane Battier, always have always will.

    BUT !!

Swift + Gay for Battier is highway robbery, it seems like a decision made under duress.

JVG wanted a veteran, and he got a good one who fits in well, but losing Swift as well? Why? He never got a chance.

Didn't we just sign him last year, and were happy with how well he was doing?

I understand what they are thinking....we upgrade the 2 guard by moving TMac back to 2, we have a solid SF now with Battier, and Center is good, but our PF spot is horrible with J-ho.....

This is a massive chemistry experiment, if Yao and Tmac are healthy all year it could work, but if Gay fulfills his potential...ah man, it reeks of Richard Jefferson all over again.

It's really hard to think of a worst outcome for this draft. Luckily, the Rockets have taken all that guess-work out of the proceedings.

Here I was thinking Ronnie Brewer was the worst case scenario. Stupid me.

Where's Harold Minor when you need him?

According to the Commercial Appeal, the trade was set up BEFORE the pick was made and was contingent on Gay being available at #8. They can't discuss the trade until July 12.

    Grizzlies ship Battier to Houston

pick UConn forward, Villanova point guard

Independence Day is about a week away.

But Grizzlies president Jerry West delivered on his draft-day promise.

He set off a firecracker or two.

Before using their 24th pick to select Villanova point guard Kyle Lowery, the Grizzlies traded forward Shane Battier to Houston, and re-acquired Stromile Swift and the draft rights to the eighth pick, Rudy Gay.

Swift signed a free-agent contract with the Rockets last summer after playing five seasons with the Griz. He was included in the deal so that the salaries would match.

NBA rules prohibit the Grizzlies from discussing the deal until it is finalized July 12. Insiders said the trade was contingent on Gay’s availability at No. 8. The Griz were also hoping to grab Connecticut’s Marcus Williams at No 24. But they chose Lowery when Williams went 22nd to New Jersey.

Overall, the Griz got younger, more athletic and tougher.

In Gay, the Griz get a player commonly compared to Scottie Pippen. He’s a high flyer with more offensive tools than Battier, who departs after five solid seasons with the Griz.

Battier, the sixth overall pick in 2001, averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Griz.

Another thing, I thought the was a rule of thumb that went like 'don't deal trades with teams in your conference'(MUCH LESS YOUR OWN DIVISION). If this deal goes through I can see karma kicking us in the ass down the road. Just watch. It'll be like the Titans(former Oilers) and Saints(Our neighbors to the east) when we pissed off both Vince Young and Reggie Bush at the same time(two birds with one stone). Giving them all the incentive to make the Houston Franchise miserable for years to come.

Maybe, just maybe, it will turn out good. Battier is a solid role player and JVG doesn't know how to develop a Rookie. Talented Rudy Gay may just turn out to be a nobody under JVG. I personally don't think JVG trusted Rookie to be in the starting role unless he has no choice.

im not sure...i highly doubt jerry west wud take stromile back like that, and i highly doubt rockets wud trade both stro and gay for battier, there has to be more to this trade...there has to...if not i really dont know wat direction this team is going in, we mite as well trade tmac for some young players and draft picks and start over....cuz if it really is just swift+gay for battier, then this team wont be doing anything until this is over

I'm sure I will get flamed for this, but to hell with it. If we really did give up Gay AND Swift for freaking Shane Battier (a 10/5 role player) then I can't support this franchise anymore. It hurts to say that but I can't support idiotic moves. Even when eliminating Gay and just focusing on the pick, there is no way in hell that Battier should be able to fetch a top 10 pick in any damn draft.

I love the Rockets to death, but you have to show me that you are at least trying to win to get my support. I am not like the typical Clippers fan (prior to this year). I won't give you my money just because "Houston" is on the jersey.

I never wish injury on players but I hope Battier fails his physical. Maybe I'll wake up in the morning and find out this was some sort of cruel joke.

Then JVG should be fired instead of cajoled.

I was fine with it when it was Juwon, I don't know about it now... Stromile's going to dunk on us again, Gay better bet a bust I guess.

Way to get that third scorer. Now we should sign Wesley to a 5 year extension

CD's stupidity never ceases to amaze me on draft day. He just doesn't f*cking get it.

    Exactly Real Shady!

The reactions in this thread are classic :D

I'm thinking that the Rockets had 3 or 4 guys in mind that they would pick at #8 and when none of them were there they took a different path. Gay has been rumored to be just like Swift, lots of talent but no desire or passion for the game. Frankly we doin't need another one of those AND we get rid of Stromile Swift who clearly was a bad decision last year. Not as exciting as I was hoping but its not as bad as some of you are making out. Just the fact that the media is talking it down makes me feel pretty confident in the decision...

So if Roy was really our primary target, doesn't this mean either:

Atlanta preferred to get Shelden Williams alone, rather than Shelden + Head

    or

The Rockets thought giving up Head was a dealbreaker there.

(or I guess the deal could have been false- I guess maybe Clutch's source was right)

So we end up taking on salary, trading a super-athletic idiot for an intelligent scrub, and giving away potentially the best player in the draft to boot? Did I miss anything?

    I am in shock here.

I can't think of a worse possible scenario. This must be what it feels like to be a Knicks fan.
