I would want a draft pick, and maybe even take DeShawn Stevenson and Mark Jackson off their hands, depending on their contracts. Of course, I really want AK-47, but that's just not likely to happen...
Now since Clippers have matched Maggette's deal, Glen Rice makes more sense for the Jazz. They are not going to get Odom and no one else in the free agent pool is worth making a long term commitment. Rockets should capitalize the oppurtunity. I still think Rice's expiring contract and a future first round pick is worth the 9.5 million trade exception.
Very intriguing idea. Congratulations for coming up with something new amongst the blzzard of trade scenarios, one that might actually come to something if Utah will trade within the division. CD has to be looking at this. Maybe you'll end up being the guy who made the right summer call.
while i had been thinking of pawning bad contracts off on utah, i hadn't even considered the whole trade exception thing. if they'd take mo, then damn. but i can't see that happening, i just don't see why'd they overpay for him even if they need to meet minimum salary and want guys who are locked up. there's gotta be someone better than mo out there i would think. but man, losing mo's 8M, losing rice's 9M at the end of the season, and an 8M trade exception to boot. i will say, i'm not exactly sure what good a rice trade exception does for us. true, it's kind of like cap space in that we could just take a guy from another team making 9.6M more than the guy we send, but isn't that how rice would be involved in any deal anyways? i mean, any team taking on rice would be doing it purely for his capspace at the end of the season and the trade exception would have the same effect. essentially, rice is a trade exception right now. why not just use him in whatever deal you're gonna make instead of making 2 deals (unless CD is just jonesing for the 2nd round pick). which brings my questions. do trade exceptions have limits for when they can be used? i'm almost sure i've heard of them expiring. is it one year? and two, can a trade exception be split up. can i make up a 5M difference in one trade, and then a 4.6M difference in another trade. i could see that being beneficial, essentially splitting rice's cap space b/t two trades instead of being limited to one. if not, then i stand by my argument that rice is a trade exception as it is. now mo on the other hand. that would be 8M to get someone we want in a trade or just more room away from the LT to sign people we want as FA's. but as Deckard mentioned, this was original and a quality idea.
Maybe I'm just lost here, and maybe I should have been to sleep a long time ago, but if you did a 3-way deal involving Glen, wouldn't you be able to split up Rice's "trade exception" amongst 2 players all the same? Oh, and who else besides the Jazz is in a position that they would want to take up a contract to clear cap space next year anyways? I mean, as it would apply to trading Glen...I can't think of anybody off the top of my head.
Since aelliott has confirmed that this is possible, I have to say this is the best idea I have read on the board this summer so far. Follow-up question - what could we do with that 9.5 mio trade exception? Could we actually use that to offer a deal to Odom starting at that amount? Since the Clippers matched the offer for Maggette, they might then not be able to match? I'd rather pay 9.5 mio a year to Odom than 6 mio. a year to Posey.
if you mean who else is trying to get way under the cap to make a run at big time FA's, then i don't know. but that's not the only reason a team takes on expiring contracts. everybody loves expiring contracts. if you're portland way over the LT and wanna cut payroll, you want an expiring contract to lower payroll. if you're a middle-market team right at the LT (lets say the Houston Rockets), you want an expiring contract to give you breathing room for next year's FA season. if you have a guy making way the hell too much money for 4 more years, you'd love an expiring contract (and the other team gets the talent upgrade) to get him off the books and do other things with the money. everybody loves huge, $9.6M expiring contracts. except perhaps the knicks. they seem to enjoy taking on massive longterm deals and apparently wanna add lafrentz to the stockpile.
well the first problem is 9.5 would be odom's starting price and would then go up. of course, i don't like odom really at all and would never dream of paying him 9.5, but anyway. i guess that is one advantage of the rice exception. that a potential trading partner can clear money off the payroll immediately for LT purposes since that uses EOY salary and thus would be more willing to trade than if it was simply cap room for next year. still think it's negligible in facilitating trades to the point that i'd rather keep rice around for insurance against injury and the 3pt stroke, and then only use his salary if a big trade comes up.
Great trade idea! And one that actually makes sense for BOTH teams! Not your normal looking trade but it makes sense for both teams. Sane, I still like your idea of getting Brian Grant for Cato/Taylor and then resigning Posey. That still looks like the best deal on the table that benefits both teams. But this Rice deal could also be interesting. I still think the Rockets need to parlay Rice's expiring contract into something. If the Wolves got Sprewell for Terrell Brandon's contract then Rice's has to be worth something equivilant.
If we manage to get the trade exception for rice, I bet the Rockets will be able to get a star player by the trade deadline, if not earlier and will also be able to unload one long term contract-Moochie/Mo. Even if the Rockets do not find anything exiting by the trade deadline, they can hold on to the expcetion and make a pitch at the free agent market next summer (sign and trade). Whereas, is they hold on to Rice, they will get well under the Luxury Tax in the following year, but still will be over the salary cap and hence out of free agent sweepstakes.
How funny is this? Check out what Marc Stein wrote in this ESPN Chat today. http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=3811 Jake (Milwaukee): Do you see the Jazz making any trades in the near future? Or do you think they will sign a couple of role players just to meet the minimum salary requirements. Is AK-47 due for a breakout year, Stevenson?? Marc Stein: (12:19 PM ET ) The Jazz, Nuggets and Heat will all have plenty of trade opportunities in coming months -- everyone will go to the teams with cap room to try to facilitate their deals. What I'm sure the Jazz would love to do now, if they can pull it off, is try to acquire guys in the last year of their contracts -- like, say, a Glen Rice from Houston -- along with a future first-round pick. That way the Jazz can get to the minimum salary without hurting its cap flexibility for next summer while also stockpiling picks. Of course, those trades aren't easy to make. It's a lot to expect to ask another team to give up a last-year contract and a pick. The Jazz might be forced to take guys with more than one year left on a deal because they're going to keep struggling to attract free agents to SLC. ### Intersting to see that other Media are picking up on this!
Very ironic to me....HMM... Nice sanjaylucknow... But I don't think we are gonna give up Glen Rice anymore. Why would we? We don't have a small forward!!! We have Boki...who hasn't played very well and should not be expected to play major minutes...and Piatkowski who is a shooting guard. We need Glen Rice now. I would give them Rice though if we can sign James Posey! I wouldn't give a first rounder though...maybe a 2nd rounder. They need us! We don't need them...But wait. It is a good idea if we can get Lamar Odom! I hope Rockets people are considering this...
Interesting scenario. I probably wouldn't give up the first rounder- more likely a 2nd, unless we made the trade more complex and traded Rice+Cato+pick for Ostertag and a 2nd. Ostertag is probably all we need out of our back up center, and his contract expires at year's end. That would clear around 7 mill from our salaries next year, definitely giving us room to work with. I would also do it if it allowed us to get rid of Moochie with Rice. A deal like that would create a trade exception for us (potential for getting in the Odom sweepstakes via S/T?), or just moves us away from the potential luxury tax levels, making using the rest of our MLE, or resigning Posey more feasible. The Jazz are close to an offer sheet with Jason Terry, but considering the cap clearing Atlanta just did, I expect them to match it.
What's up with this thread? I thought that we were only supposed propose trades that get All-Stars for scrubs. Good job Sanjay.
You mean we get the 9.5 million trade exception too right? Getting rid of 2 bad contracts...is nice. But Greg Ostertag a Rocket?!? AHAHAHAAH. I hate him. He looks stupid. He really really sucks! He would be a negative effect towards Yao. But I'm thinking of it as Rice + Cato + MOOCHIE + a 1st for Ostertag + Odom or Posey or payroll relief from 9.5 million trade exception + a 2nd..... So why not?!? Ostertag makes 8 million per year while Rice makes 9 and Cato makes 7 and if Moochie is added 4 million... This gives them about 12 million more in payroll... Jerry Sloan would be scorning Cato all the time... If we did this...I would sign Odom! Or I would sign Stephen Jackson and Darvin Ham and Kenny Anderson and a bunch of role players for 1 year...And I would try to move Maurice Taylor for expiring contract/s. That would give us 25 million to spend to get Kevin Garnett! And we would still not be penalized by the luxury tax! I wish...
We have to realistic. The only reason Jazz would consider such a trade is because Rice is in the final year of his contract. Why would they trade Ostertag and his expiring contract for Cato and Moochie? 9.5 Million of trade exception for Rice's contract itself will be terrific for the Rockets. It gives them tremendous flexibility.
