Actually, players do lose value. It makes sense. The 18th pick in the draft for any team is like drafting a top 15 type player (because the actual draft will always be different from a team’s own board). But Dekker in particular may be worth the 12th pick to some, and 30th pick to others. And more towards the latter because he did, after all, lasted to pick 18. Meanwhile, to the Rockets he’s clearly worth some pick higher than 18. Add to the fact that there are only 29 other potential “buyers,” and that only a few will be potential trade partners, and you can see how the value of an actual player decrease, even if he technically may be worth that pick.

Meanwhile, a pick is almost always the more optimistic projection no matter the team, because every team feels their draft board is better than the actual draft board.

The car buying analogy is really just to show that now that Dekker is "off the lot" his warts are exposed which could turn off buyers that didn't know he had them pre draft. I absolutely think that very few rookies DONT lose trade value in the first Summer/fall after they are drafted. Few rookies gain value... maybe only late 2nd rounders that shock people like your Chandler Parsons types.

Dekker would be probably be worth less than he is to the Rockets. While others consider him a throw in, Morey probably views his value the same as it was on June 25th. So its hard to see him "trading him in" without a good road trip or two to break him in. Unless its your rookie as a GM, you are probably more prone to snap judgement based on exposed warts. When you make the investment yourself on the front end, its a different experience.

Point being, I see it being very rare that he's traded unless its a difference maker type of trade... which i find it hard to see happening because of the non-flexibility with the hard cap. And no.... Markieff Morris wouldn't be a difference maker on this team IMO. He's a stretch 4 in this system, and he's not really a great one at that shooting under 32% last year. Jones shot a higher rate than that as did D-Mo, and D-Mo IMO is a better defender, and can play the 5 if needed in spurts.

Add in the character issues, and its a no-brainer to me. I'm not even sure Morey would want to trade Dekker for Morris straight up if it was legal. Not sure why we have to keep on talking about this guy. Might as well bring back the Rubio and Rondo talk as well. Makes about as much sense.

All that being said, if Pau Gasol comes available this year, I still want to trade for that guy.

I know I know.... Howard and Gasol apparently didn't work last time, but actually that last week of the season when Kobe was out those two really had a great stretch of games where the high/low action really was killing teams including the Rockets in one game.

I doubt the Bulls let him go though. Probably going to see Noah or Gibson get moved first. Sounds like the Pau/Mirotic front line is what they are really excited about over there for good reasons.

Sheesh...I know someone in the city of Houston...namely all those who live in the city of Houston and are fans of the Houston Rockets...and maybe some that dont live in the city of Houston and are also Rockets fans....and these sources tell me that they are all in belief that all Rockets players are on the table as trade bait for an upgrade at PF with the exception of Harden, Howard, Ty Lawson, and Ariza. Take it for what its worth.

I will say that a player drafted 18th is generally valued less than the 18th pick as the pick is much more liquid than the player. The player's value before being picked until the trade deadline usually doesn't change much except for high drafted players that don't perform and low draft picked players that perform well. I doubt Dekkar has shown anything to other teams to drastically affect his value.

Morris isn't a difference maker? He's basically a better version of Jones. His 3 point % is less than Jones, but Jones really isn't guarded as tightly at the three point line or asked to provide as much offense (scoring and passing) as Morris. It is tough to judge defense from a few games, but Morris looks like he has better defensive awareness than Jones.

I'm not sure there is enough of a difference between Morris and Jones to throw in K.J. and Dekkar. Though I've been disappointed in K.J., I think he still has solid role player potential. I think Dekkar will eventually be tried as the stretch 4 and doubt his value has dropped in the Rockets eyes after one training camp. Also, I would be worried Morris would throw a hissy fit coming off the bench.

On Dekkar for Morris straight up if it were legal...Morris can help now. Dekkar might be able to help. It would be a no-brainer to take Morris while DMo is hurt.

Did Dekker do something in the off-season that's riled a few fans on the board? I'm surprised at all the negativity thrown at him.

He's played in some preseason games and isn't ready. I think a lot of people hoped he would come in and play day 1 like Parsons. A lot of other people thought he was a bust when picked and use his preseason performance to pat themselves on the back. The internet does not usually capture the voice of the patient very well.

I wouldn't be against Pau coming over here at all. His game doesn't rely on speed or athleticism to the point in which he ages really nicely (Like zbo) But since is contract is a bit much, what exactly would we do to get him? I wouldn't be willing to give up Jones AND Dmo just for him.

well we went deep last year in playoffs some can argue we were a guard away from handling GSW, even game 1 or 2 we almost stole there, but we relied on harden too much.

N.O pick was something that was talked about constantly here but as of now it seems like we got our hopes up and should've traded it for a proven player, there were so many guards available last yr at deadline, even if it was for a rental who knows how far we would've went last yr.

don't see dekker playing at all or helping us in playoffs this yr

er actually quite a few rookies raised their trading value during preseason by showing flashes of stardom. Examples: Stanley Johnson Bobby Portis.
Chicago would never now accept a 20th first rounder for Portis.

About Pau he has a player option next year and the most likely scenario is that he opts out. His bro wants to recruit him to Memphis.
Also in Chicago he has problems accepting coming off the bench and that was why it never was an option for both Thibs or Hoidberg.
Good luck convincing him to opt in next year for a severely bellow market value contract to sub in for Dwight-which I'm not even sure he holds in high esteem.

And Chicago will lose every little bit of credibillity they have left as an organisation if they do any trade with Pau who chose them and took a severe discount and was tormented in LA about all the trade scenarios. Not to mention that they do midseason trades once every five years.

All of this is considering "RIGHT NOW" purposes which I understand. The preseason has everyone concerned which I get.

My point is its not Morris vs. Jones, or Morris vs. Dekker, etc.

Its Morris vs. the investment long term in D-Mo, Dekker's potential, and the potential of retaining Jones at the right price as a backup with a good solid year of insurance while D-Mo get's back from injury, and while Harrell learns how to play basketball without fouling every 10 seconds.

I understand you can do the deal without D-Mo, but like the reasons why the Rockets and Josh Smith parted ways, the same thing happens when D-Mo is fully healthy. I don't see a world where it makes sense to invest in Morris as a backup knowing that D-Mo is a player we want to invest in long term. I also see a world where Morris is a problem for this team like he's been for his previous team which he threw a hissy fit with, and add in the criminal charges, and on the court behavior (think he led the league in technicals) and we have multiple reasons to be concerned about a Markieff Morris who isn't even a starter on a team with some question marks already... I mean Jason Terry is only one man. We only have so many folks here to babysit.

Can Morris help us now as he's an improvement over Jones... well of course, but we are really have tunnel vision here with people really seriously wanting to do this. You project where we are going with this team, and I have a huge issue with this trade because I believe in D-Mo, and I believe that Jones can suffice the need while D-Mo gets back from injury.

When D-Mo is back at 100% hopefully sooner than later, you have Jones as a solid cheap backup who can do 80% of what Morris can do, and you have the potential ability to bring him back on a value contract next Summer if you get a bit lucky.

All the while you ALSO get to keep projects for the future at the much needed SF position for future investment as Ariza will NOT be playing at the level he's at now in a couple years. KJ and Dekker have long term value, and can potentially help now.

I mean I'm all about helping the team win now, but when we talk about winning now, are we referring to winning like preseason to November 15th, or are we talking about March to June.... because I think without making moves, I'm very optimistic about March to June, and I think we have enough to withstand this first stretch of the season that D-Mo is out, and the rookies/youngster work out the kinks.

Am I crazy for thinking this way, and not jumping to the future convict/ petulant child option of Markieff Morris even if he helps slightly right this second as a slightly better player than Jones, a guy who is just a versatile backup who can fill in during injury issues????
