I think people forget that we are still one of the top, if not the top manufacturer in the world, and that many products are made better here.

Competition, on a global level, makes everyone better, drives prices down for everyone.

Isn't "buying American goods" somewhat counterproductive to American businesses?

If people start buying just American cars, wouldn't there be no incentive for our carmakers to innovate and keep up with the rest of the world? Wouldn't then we'd have even crappier cars on the market for the same price?

Then wouldn't we have the car version of Windows Vista? :)

Well, there was competition between the American auto companies before the Japanese entered the market...to see who could unload the biggest piece of crap.

I for one, want a top wage, for a rewarding job with full benefits and retirement so I can afford all the inexpensive products I can get. Oh, I know they are made in sweat shops, with little concern for worker safety or welfare, child labor laws, overtime laws or pollution controls; or democracy or freedom; but hey, I'm me, an American. It's my birthright to be rich and if you don't like it, I'll have my poorly paid armed forces come talk to you.
But I'm not a hypocrite, I can guarantee you that any one else in the world would do the same thing if they could.

If you read my first post you could see I was all for sweat shops and cheap goods. I mainly had a problem with people buying expensive goods imported because we can compete in that market.

Also in the full size truck market.

american cars are crap.. thats the problem... they are crap because they are unreliable, ugly and not innovative ...you really cant compare an american car with a japanese or european car..
japanese cars - nice reliable quality cars that last forever, they also make some nice luxary higher end cars (lexus, infinit, acura)
german cars - nice solid feeling...hard rigit steel.. BMW's and Mercedes have awesome engines and handling.. high end luxary
    lets see american cars
-GM = crap and unreliable.. after year 1, your a/c breaks down. your auto power locks dont work.. things start to fall apart
    Chrysler ditto to the above.
ford - same .. massive recalls all the time..
and on top of that they are usually the ugliest designs ever!!! just the plastics in the interior are big and ugly..

well that sounds smart. I'm curious when you did your extensive research for this post what numbers of recalls did you find for the F-150 compared to the Tundra from 2005-2007? I ask because while I am obviously less informed than you are I know Tundra had over a million units affected for 5 recalls. So I wonder how many recalls Ford has to be listed as "massive recalls"

    dont you have this backwards?

If luxury goods are something America can truly compete in... shouldn't you just let them compete and then buy the product that suits you best regardless of origin?

America is the #1 manufacturing country in the world. I think we can compete just fine in a number of areas.

If all american cars are crap, I wonder why GM is the top selling foreignt carmaker in China, Hondas are made in the midwest, etc etc etc.

some of you guys need to turn off "Gung-Ho" and get into the reality that is the 21st century economy.

They've done it again. The Asian automakers, especially the Japanese dominate the latest Consumer Reports survey (subscription needed for full reports) on auto reliability.

Of the 33 models CR picked to be "most reliable," 23 are from Japanese automakers. Some, like the Toyota
    Toyota Motor Corp
Prius, we've come to expect to see on the list. Others, like the Hyundai Santa Fe, are newcomers. In fact, this is the first time Hyundai models have made the CR list.

    here you go dumb nuts..
i thought everyone knew that year after year japanese cars dominate american cars in terms of reliability.. car and drive.. consumer reports.. just to name a few huge publications have all done research into this and the results are always the same.. I also have personal experience from this. owned a ford (broke down after year 2).. had a buick park avenue... all the auto electronic climate crap went dead after a year.. now i only buy lexus.. great car.. quiet refined reliable.

Ford Recalls 4.6 Million Vehicles To Fix Cruise Control Problem

    Date posted: 02-29-2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a call for some 4.6 million Ford vehicles built before 2002 to have their cruise control switches fixed or deactivated. The problem could lead to fire, and in fact the agency has received some 60 reports of fires just since last August, NHTSA said.
