I was for drafting V. Young waaaaay before this game.... documented in previous older posts. I do like Bush alot- very fast- very elusive, has some strength for size. But I see him very limited in tight places- and I have noticed for the last two seasons that he NEEDS space to really dazzle. He is not good at breaking tackles (unless you include swipes with the arm as he runs by people) and he does not work well in tight quarters. When the hole is there wide open he gets through it as fast as anyone I've seen. But in the NFL he will not have that kind of space to work with often. He is not as physical a runner a Barry Sanders in my opinion. I would want to use Bush at receiver mostly and on sprint draws and outside runs mostly. I do not think he will be used effectively as an every down carry the load runner in the NFL. And maybe that's fine. But I sure wouldn't slight VY's skills and athleticism at this point. He really looks off the chart. One of a kind. He will be very successful barring injury in the NFL. And a much better prospect for the long haul. I have felt this way since last year's Rose Bowl against Mich. I am not a Longhorn fan but I am a Texan fan. Mr. McNair- don't blow this opportunity to get VY.
To be clear, I have never said we should take Bush.... I think Bush is a great college player who will be only a GOOD pro player. His speed will be mitigated in the NFL. Vince is a Great college player who will also be a great NFL player. Even Marcus Allen and Anthony Munoz said as much...and they were both great USC player in college and the pros. DD
I give Texas props for slowing down Reggie but he still averaged nearly 7 yards a carry and had 90+ yds receiving. The Texans will draft Bush so all the VY talk is a waste of time.
I agree that Vince really muddied the water last night as if he does come out (a forgone conclusion so I've been told by family living in Austin), the Texans have a lot to think about. I would also agree that Bush's bonehead lateral attempt really created a ton of doubt about him where there was no doubt previously. UT's speed & defensive scheme really took away his outside running lanes and USC had no response (it's as if they had watched no film of the UT defense prior to the game). However, I am extremely leery of Young because of his funky throwing motion and the fact that his game in college depends on him using his speed at scrambling. Last night he consistently scrambled to the right time after time without USC recognizing what the hell was happening. Plus, he looked really good because USC's tackling last night was outright pathetic. In the NFL, he'll be matched against guys who are just as fast as him who can tackle and, if he comes here, he'll inherit an Offensive Line that nearly got his predesessor killed. At the end of the day, in the NFL, your QB either believes that he can win with his feet or his arm. Vince believes too much in his feet and therefore is one knee injury away from losing his speed. However, he is NOT the second coming of Michael Vick as many have asserted. That's because he can actually throw a 10-15 yard out pattern with a degree of touch - something Vick has been unable to do ever since he came into the league. But the good thing about Vince is that he appears to be coachable - witness the progress in his passing ability from last year to this. It's going to be a VERRRY interesting offseason for the Texans indeed.
Then they will continue to be a mediocre to poor team. Vince Young will be a player that changes the fortunes of an entire team. Reggie Bush will be a nice player, a good piece to the puzzle, but probably not a superstar. Hell, he did not even get the ball in crucial situations last night..... DD
Who are we going to trade Carr for ? I would rather have Carr and Bush than Young and whatever lesser talent we get for Carr.... There are a lot of other "incredible" running quarterbacks out there too. Is Vince Young going to be better than Michael Vick ? Was Emmitt Smith faster than Bush ?
All I can say on this topic is look at Michael Vick. Is he a real running threat now? Not really after running like he did in college at first, and getting a few injuries for playing like that. I think that Vince Young is the greatest college QB to play the game. Has anyone taken the time out to look at the way he throws the football? It is simply ugly. If he comes into the NFL throwing the ball like that he will be horrible. As a QB you can't run the ball in the NFL unless you like to go see doctors. Vince will need several years of training with an NFL team to be successful. Once again go back and look at the way he throws the ball.
Bush can't bowl over people like Jerome Bettis can. That's why USC kept using LenDale White up the gut for those 2 yard runs. But if Bush finds a crack in the middle he'll slip right through it in full speed.
Im not saying Young is a bad player but lets be real for a second. That little fake handoff to the back and then Young taking off for 20yds won't work in the NFL. Plus if you take Young you have to wait atleast 3 years for him to develop into a good qb while on the other hand Bush can explode on the scene as a rookie just like Carnell Williams. Bush could make this offense so much better next year but with Young you never know how long it will take the Texans to be a contender. Bush is the smarter pick and McNair will select him April 28th.
Quiet with the throwing motion, David Carr throws side arm and plenty of other QBs in the past have too, with plenty of success. Go back and look at the way the passes are completed, that's what matters.
Bush is a good pick, but he would be a waste at number 1, he is not a difference maker. Think Eric Metcalf only a bit better. DD
How the heck is Bush not a difference maker? It's hilarious how you are making these extreme statements with nothing to back them up. Will Vince be a great passer in the NFL? If not, then we should take Bush. If Vince can pass like a McNabb or Culpepper as well as run then he will be great. Otherwise he'll be like Vick and have inconsistent results. And I don't want to wait 3 years for him to develop.
He is not a difference maker??? Bush is the best playmaker in the draft and the best player in the draft and one of the best college players of all time. Carr with new coaching and Reggie Bush is a much better team than Vince Young and Dom Davis.
I am not talking about throwing side arm. The complete motion is just bad. Look at the balls he throws when they are in the air they are anything but pretty. Look Vincent is my favorite college player, but that does not make me blind or a homer when it comes to evaluating him. How many passes went to his WR yesterday? About 90% were thrown to the TE. He is a winner like Mike Vick was a winner, but in the NFL he will not be able to rush for 200 yards and will face linebackers that can handle a TE.
Reggie Bush behind the mediocre offensive line the Texans have would not even be as productive as DD. Of course this is my opinion.....I just think that Bush is a good player, but he did not even get the ball in CLUTCH situations last night. Also, he rarely runs between the tackles, and to be a QUALITY NFL running back your majority of carriers are between the tackles. Bush is good, just not worthy of the first pick...IMHO. VY on the other hand, again IMHO, will be one of the best players to come out of college in the last 25 years, only Bo Jackson & Barry Sanders had the same freakish combination of size speed and balance that VY has. VY touches the ball on EVERY play, and can beat you with his arm, his feet, and his leadership. The Texans need ALL of that. DD
The same thing could be said about Barry Sanders during his NFL career...get the ball in the clutch that is, or in short yardage situations.
You're not a big fan of his because you just made up that 90% to TE line, around half or more went to his WRs, look it up if you don't believe me. Again, it doesn't matter to me how his passes (throwing motion) looks as long as the passes are completed, just look at Michael Vick, he throws beautiful spirals and his form is perfect, but he misses a lot. A good pass is always one that's caught, that goes for basketball too. IMO, Young will be great NFL quarterback, but I'm not saying that the Texans should draft him and trade Carr, I actually like Carr and still like Bush. They really can't screw this up no matter what they decide to do.
But if you are a Texans fan why would you want to go through those growing pains again?? Runningback is alot easier to play than QB and Bush can make that type of impact to help lead the Texans. I don't think Carr will ever be a great qb but with a new staff he may turn into a decent one and you can win with a decent qb and an elite back. Young was outstanding last night but you know on the next level he won't be able to get 25yds anytime he wants it.
And another reason to draft VY over Bush.....QB's are more of the leaders than the RB....QBs touch every single play on the offensive side of the ball. So, do you get a player who is special on 20 or so plays a game, or one that is special on over 70 plays a game? Seems elementary to me. DD
