I didn't hear the comments, but in <a href="http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=141046">another thread</a> it was pointed out that Tracy McGrady criticized the "depth perception" in the Toyota Center. I remember also how he complained earlier in the season about the fans groaning after a Rockets missed free throw, that it made it harder for the Rockets players.

All seem like excuses... but something isn't right with McGrady at home. This year especially, but over his nearly four-year Rockets career, there is a significant difference in T-Mac's home and away numbers.

His FT shooting is an absolute joke.

Pretty interesting statistics. Wonder if he is just generally more motivated in a hostile environment.

Career wise, I don't think the statistical difference is all that relevant. His shooting percentages are similar in everything except free throws. I also think that of all things, free throws would have the least impact from any problems regarding depth perception. It is the most repeated shot in basketball from a standard length. Many players can shoot them with their eyes closed.

It seems to me that if his ft% were better, then his ppg would also be on par with road stats.

    One word,

    Concentration

This probably also means he needs to drive the ball to the hole more at home instead of settling for his bail out jump shot. His freethrow shooting is rediculous this season.

    Yao at home...

    23.5 PPG/11.5 RPG/2.5 AST/3.3 TOPG/0.7 SPG/2.5 BPG

All of those are better then his season averages.

And from what I've seen from the rest of the Rockets, they either do slightly better or slightly worse then thier averages...not anything as drastic as a 5 ppg difference.

In fact, I think most of the Rockets do better at home. Shane actually hits 45% at home...vs 41% season average and etc. etc.

So really...I don't think it's an arena problem...

Which leads me to conclude, what the hell Mac?

I believed you guys remembered that in the past few years, there were teams that missed badly or bricked severely at Toyota center until the media joked that an opponent player (can't remembered who) check the rim and see whether there's distortion or misalignment.A lot team got very low score while playing in Toyota Center during JVG times. Well, some fans attribute these scores to our defensive play.

I think it's all in his head. Someone tells him something about the depth perception and all of a sudden he struggles.

    Battier:
    2007 home- 45% fg, 43.4% 3pt
    2007 road- 39.2% fg, 33.3% 3pt

    2006 home- 43.8 fg, 42.1% 3pt
    2006 road- 45.5% fg, 42.1% 3pt

Luther is struggling more at home this year, but he was MUCH better at home last year.

Rafer is about the same home and road.

When Yao injured and couldn't stand or run on court, he sit on chair and practice shootings.

What did T-Mac do when his leg is injured?

That just shows the difference between them on their desires to win, to improve.

Yao has quite some physical weaknesses that can be exploited, but he has strong motivations and you see them through his hard work.

Only if T-Mac has a fraction of that.

I guess depth perception is just a superficial excuse, the real unspeakable problem is it's hard to find properly sized sanitary pads for a 6-8 p***y.

JVG called him the best road player in the nba 2 years ago. Quite an interesting statistic.

    Good question.

    2004 home- 41.0% fg, 27.7% 3pt
    2004 road- 44.8% fg, 36.7% 3pt

    2003 home- 41.4% fg, 32.1% 3pt
    2003 road- 42.0% fg, 35.6% 3pt

    2002 home- 46.6% fg, 35.4% 3pt
    2002 road- 44.7% fg, 42.4% 3pt

    Career home- 44.1% fg, 32.9% 3pt
    Career road- 43.8% fg, 35.4% 3pt

Looks like the last few years he has been a better shooter on the road, particularly on 3 pt field goals. The same is the case for his whole career, but it is more pronunced beginning in 2002.

Could be any number of things - maybe the rims at Toyota are tighter, the backboards faster, maybe everyone else shoots a little worse at Toyota. Or it could be the Reggie Miller factor, who seemed to thrive off rowdy Garden crowds, etc. Would love to know what Reggie's career road v. home numbers were.

A hostile environment should be easy enough to achieve at the Toyota Center. Just get all the YOFs from Clutchfans and buy them tickets to all the Rockets' remaining home games. Tmac will be so angered, shamed, embarrassed, and confused by all the vitriol and bad grammar hurled his way that he'll average damn near 30 ppg for the rest of the season.

Interesting thread. I looked into the numbers for the last 4 years. The most relevant, in my opinion, would be the FT%. That purely depends on shooting, and not other factors like opposing defense or getting good shots. The difference is clearly more pronounced for McGrady, but if you just look at the rest of the Rockets they've also been a worse shooting team at home, in general.

    Code:
