With Blake Griffin at 100%, and Tracy McGrady as a playmaker, the Los Angeles Clippers have potential to reach the playoffs. They gain experience from a first round exit, and come back in 2012 for a deep playoff run.

McGrady to work out with Clippers

    By Ramona Shelburne

LAS VEGAS -- Free agent forward Tracy McGrady has scheduled a workout with the Los Angeles Clippers next week.

"We've said from the beginning we'd explore every option to make this team as competitive as possible," Clippers general manager Neil Olshey said Thursday night after the team's summer league game in Las Vegas.

"From a due diligence standpoint, if Tracy McGrady wants to come work out for you, for the price of a plane ticket and a dinner, how do you not bring him in?"

Olshey has known McGrady, 31, since the seven-time All-Star and two-time NBA scoring champion was in high school and Olshey worked for agent Arn Tellem.

Despite drafting Al-Farouq Aminu eighth overall last month and signing free agent Ryan Gomes, the Clippers still have a noticeable hole in their starting lineup at small forward.

"Tracy and I have a good relationship," Olshey said. "We've known each other for a long time. He and Baron [Davis] have a good relationship. We obviously have a need for playmaking and scoring on the wings.

"You're talking about one of the greatest offensive talents in our game, and if Tracy is motivated and he's right, and he wants to be with us ... how could you not bring him in and take a look?"

McGrady has played 65 games over the past three seasons as back, knee and shoulder injuries consistently hampered his play. He hasn't shot above 40 percent from the field since the 2007-08 season.

He was traded from the Rockets to the New York Knicks in February, but averaged just 9.4 points and 3.7 rebounds in a little over 26 minutes a game.

As the Knicks season ended in April, McGrady told reporters in New York that he might retire if he's unable to regain his form over the summer and resurrect his career.

"If it don't happen this summer, I'll ride off into the sunset," he said before sitting out the Knicks season finale. "If I could go through another offseason of working my [butt] off, and I don't feel I'm getting any better, I can't see myself coming back playing the way I'm playing right now. I just don't see it happening."

Olshey said he's been told that McGrady has been training hard in Houston and Orlando this summer and initial reports about his condition sound promising.

"That's why we're brining him next week for a workout," Olshey said. "From a due diligence standpoint, how could you not take a look?"

I'm betting he gives them 8-10 good games...The games when he plays his former teams. We all know that for some reason, T-Mac always gets up for those games.

We've had that macro for the last four years. TMac will fit right in on the injury list.

It's pretty sad to go from a franchise player who once made 20 mil/yr to auditioning for the Clippers. I mean hell.. who auditions for the Clippers? If you have to audition to be on the Clippers, you should just quit basketball.

lol your post really made me laugh....

anyway....I agree with DD. With Tmac and a healthy griffin, they could very well get the 8th seed and if they are lucky, they may even creep into the 6th or 7th spot. I am with DD on this one, I am really rooting for us to knock them out in the first round. Not a hate on tmac, but just will be funny to watch lol.

Tracy should be able to plug right into the lineup and show Blake Griffin and the other youngsters on that squad how to raise hopes in the regular season and then fail in the first round every season.

If the Rockets finish second and meet the Clippers in the 1st round....and the Clippers go up 3-1....and T-Mac says it's good to be out of the first round...LOL

He ended up like his idol, Penny, much sooner than expected.

This is what I was thinking.

Those of you who think McGrady would last an entire season after playing only a handful of games the last 3 years are dreaming. Even if he goes to camp and makes their roster (which is a HUGE if), he'll go down to injury again. McGrady's career is over and this reeks of desperation. It's telling that none of the good teams want to give him the time of day.
