He said he could have contributed last year on the Spurs, and then after one offseason, he retires?

    So random.

the fact that he got to get out of the first round and actually play minutes in the NBA finals is beautiful.

Maybe he has wanted to retire from the NBA since last year but he kept trying to get on just so he could move past the 1st round.

Sounds like he's both content with playoff run and taking his ball and going home.

He put a human face to his announcement. So this gives him a chance to just be McGrady the person, instead of T-Mac the player underachiever. And so it can let things around him relax, possibly mend bridges. And people can look back and reflect more positively on things.

(And he can still get all the adulation he needs a player in China)

It's a retirement from the NBA. It's still considered retirement when people quit their career, but work on the side.

If only..that will be forever be the line hanging over his head. If only he didn't leave Toronto, if only he didn't have to do it all on his own, if only he had stayed healthy, if only he had the work ethic of MJ / Kobe, if only he had leadership qualities, if only he had the will to win, if only he kept his ego in check, if only he kept his mouth shut, if only he had stayed true, if only he hadn't faked surgery, if only he hadn't asked for more playing time when everybody saw he was washed up, if only he had stuck with playing defense when he saw how great he was on offense, if only he had given 110% every game, he could've been one of the best and a multi-champion.

Here is the truth. No one should feel sorry for TMAC. Huge fan when he was here, but utterly disappointed in how he carried himself and this team.

    This was the expectation:
    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/8tFDnA6ID5s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    This was the result:
    1. Season 1: bounced out of the 1st round by 40 to the Dallas Mavericks..
    2. Season 2: injuries and worst in our division
    3. Season 3: Lost to Utah and fired JVG
    4. Season 4: 22 game win streak; Lost to Utah in 6 with Rick Adelman
    5. Season 5: Declared himself on the IR having Microfracture surgery; Rockets advance without him
    6. Season 6: Traded him to the Knicks mid-season

For anyone defending TMAC for the way things happened...that is just plain idiotic. For whatever the reason was, He did not deliver. He didnt make his team better and found a way to lose at the most crucial moments of time. Individually, I love TMAC and his game. His game is effortless and was really easy for him. However his desire to get better, his drive to move forward, and his will to win has always kept him from achieving great things. The City of Houston treated him well. But he didnt reciprocate. He threw teammates, staff and coaches under the bus. He never worked to keep his body for failing on him.

    His Head Coaches:
    1. Darrell Walker
    2. Butch Carter
    3. Doc Rivers
    4. Jeff Van Gundy
    5. Rick Adelman
    6. Mike D'Antoni
    7. Larry Drew
    8. Greg Popovich

^^^^^ He made tons of money, endorsements and has had a nice life. He didnt win a title, but he made out like gang busters with a career earning well over 163 million dollars just on salary...

Repped! I don't know why people feel sorry for him, he got Kobe money without getting Kobe results.

And he didn't even play that much, no Olympics like Kobe, plus since he didn't lead teams past the first round the majority of his career, he didn't get all those extra games you get when you advance.

He didn't have to play for China like Yao had to every summer.

Despite all of this, he's got a legion of fans that would make Lin fans jealous. And in his mind, he's already won championships based on what if scenarios.

So good for you Tmac! Happy retirement.

I agree on almost every point. I'm sure he didn't want his body to fall apart like it did and I'm sure he wanted a solution for his ailing body. Now microfracture might or might not have been the right solution but I'm sure he wanted his body to recover. his body and play just couldnt keep up with his mouth.

This is about positioning. It's an attempt to get a contending team to sign him up for a defined role. That's why the "doors open" comment.

It's been a very good career statswise, moneywise and regular season related.
Playoff picture is average because he was not favored in most of them. He did perform just not good enough in the game 6 and 7 of playoff games. I won't go on talking about his teammates and if he had better role players bla bla.

Good career but not great. All in all it's no failure for a 9th pick of the draft.
Borderline HOF player who might be in the discussion but not going.
All you can ask for. How many players did reach Top 10 of All greats?
Well just 10 out of millions.

He and the Rockets were favored against the Utah Jazz when we had HOME COURT ADVANTAGE. We lost a GAME 7 IN HOUSTON with a HEALTHY TMAC.

Basically, they won't be in the free agent pool in 2k anymore.

Because we had 2 superstars. As a team the Jazz won over that and our role players. I remember we were one or two rebounds away from that win.

one or two rebounds and you pin that on 2 players? Why not suggest Battier or Juwon Howard or Hayes get those rebounds?

We were favored on paper and they still won. So what. It was not total dominance of the Jazz displayed either that could have been an embarassment.
It was a 4 seed against 5 seed match.
Much closer than it would be 1st vs. 8th or 2nd vs. 7th.
