Darfur is political. Kanye is a question of civility. Opinions can differ on political questions but when it comes to someone being crass/stupid/ignorant on TV more people can agree. You realize that billions of people in the Middle East, China, India, the Far East and parts of Europe say the same stuff we say about Darfur about the US and Israel right? That at worst it's genocide and at best it's ethnic crime what the US's $3 billion a year enables Israel to do to Palestinians. And those folks are just as self-righteous as you about how sad and amazing it is that not everyone in the world shares their political view about that particular thing. This particular conflict in the Sudan has been going on for 30-40 years and the ongoing civil wars over there have been going on for more than 50. Even among our allies there isn't a consensus on it... not even the UN can agree if it's "genocide" or what it is. To me it makes complete sense that what's going on half a world away in some 3rd world nation isn't important to Americans when we have so much to deal with here. Just this year there has been a race war in China, bombings in Jakarta, political implosion in Honduras etc etc etc that the average American doesnt' know crap about. Darfur is terrible but it's 1 conflict among dozens around the world that Hollywood has picked as a cause celeb. Good for Tmac for feeling strong about this issue and good on him for expressing his honest opinions, but dont get your panties in a bunch deciding for everyone else what to think about political stuff this is America dude. I watch Maddow sometimes and I dont really have a strong opinion on her either way but she's clearly a cable news entertainer/tv personality along the lines of Oreily or Keith Olbermann rather than a journalist who's made her bones. You must understand that her show is just for fun? It's not news. And she for sure she aint the second coming of Tim Russert or Charlie Rose
I gotta give T-Mac props for what he is doing over there. You have to respect it and him for that. A lot of players get all that money and get foolish. T-mac is leaving a mark you know doing something positive.
I love this Dikembe-effect. After Mutombo being a rocket, our superstars have become such a good men. Good job Tracy!
what about take care of the USA 1st then worry about other countries..... people losing their jobs / homes / and the AMERICAN dreams to follow.............
Come on man. Being concerned about genocide in Africa doesn't exclude you from being concerned about America. Don't be an American-Only-Fan, i.e. Go Rockets, except for Yao and Scola!
Ah, well I see that the fascists have come out of the woodwork... What McGrady is doing is great, and I hope it will mean that more people will recognize what is happening and do what they can to help stop it.
Tracy makes over 23 million next year and 22.5 this year, and all he gave is 75,000 and that is only because it is a tax write off. His 75K donation is equilvalent to a person who earns 30,000/year donating $75. Commendable, yes, but hardly the saint some of you are making him out to be. People, seriously. I don't know what's in TMac's heart. I'm sure he cares for people and the fact that he went there and has donated money is to be commended. But NBA players change their jersey numbers for one main reason, to sell more jerseys. When Kobe switched from #8 to #24 a few years ago, it catapulted his jersey sales back to #1 in the NBA. It has been estimated that Kobe has earned an extra 8 mil in the 2 years since he changed his number (from increased jersey sales). While I doubt TMac will equal Kobe's sales, he still stands to make several extra million dollars for changing his number. Tracy will be the highest paid player in the NBA this year, but this is the last year of his contract. The combo of his declining production, injuries and the economic woes will most likely reduce his next contract. Big time. So, while he may care for the people of Darfur, TMac will be the person in the world who benefits most from his number change. Any of that going to Darfur?
Classic hater behavior. You do realize that almost everyone in the world gives ZERO dollars to issues like this, right? If you're going to hate, hate on them, not the people who are at least doing something.
75K is 75K more than they had before. Not to mention his time and the fact he has drawn more support (and money) from NBA players, celebs and average people. Just because he didn't do more doesn't mean what he did is not a huge deal. Keep in mind this is a guy who never went to college and has been a millionaire since he was a teen. His maturation process and realization of the world around him is greatly skewed based on his fame and success yet he still spent a summer in a 3rd world country to help complete strangers. Good job, Tracy.
Who in the hell would travel to Africa for a publicity stunt? You can pull stunts at home if you're fifthly rich man! You don’t have to go anywhere if you’re rich and famous to get attention in the US. You just don't know how small that made you look. I have a question.....tell us all how much did you give since the 75k Tracy gave is nickels and lent? This man traveled thousands of miles to an unstable and hostile place in a third world country basically to HELP people in need. What the hell have you done lately?
